ELSA Blog

Because I'm HAPPY!

1/6/2020

Picture
Good morning wonderful VPS children!

I hope you have all had a wonderful half term.
The weather has been absolutely beautiful,  I know it has certainly put a HUGE smile on my face! What have you been up to? Please share with us on the blogs on Purple Mash!

Here is a photo taken yesterday when I had a safely distanced picnic in the park.  I felt so HAPPY yesterday - I was very grateful for the lovely green space, reconnecting with my best friend (2M of course)  and the weather. I took a walk down the canal too which glistened in the beautiful sun.

It was timed perfectly ( I still don't know how I managed to jump that high!)
Picture
Today I am trying something a bit different by uploading a video!
I must admit I was a little bit shy at first filming myself because I felt a bit silly but I would really like to share a book I have at home with you.

The book is called' How Are You Feeling Today'. This book is filled with fun, imaginative ways to help you understand and cope with your emotions! It also helps to boost your emotional literacy ( being able to explain and name your feelings).

Intro to the book.

Whoops! Book is the wrong way around for the first part! Soz!

First feeling of the week.... HAPPY!!

So next time you feel the feeling of happiness think about all of the different ways you can manage it and enjoy it!

Mental Health Awareness Week - Day 5

22/5/2020

Picture
Good morning lovely people,

So today marks the end of the ELSA 5 days of kindness challenge! I hope you have enjoyed it and remember to continue to be much kinder to yourself. You  are so important - Look after yourself - You matter.

Yesterday morning I went on a walk around the docks. I saw the most beautiful family of ducklings! They were SO cute and fluffy. They really made my day!

Remember it is half term next week so make sure you use this time to recharge your batteries! Do different things that make you happy! If you can, please try to go outside next week (safely and with parental permission) and feel the rays of sunshine on your skin. Take some deep breaths and tell yourself I CAN DO THIS!

I am laughing because as I was writing this part of the blog (we write them the day before) I heard an ice cream van and I got SO excited, I jumped up and ran in scrambling about my purse for money so I could buy one. I felt like I was a child again!

I will attach the last acitvity below!

Have a wonderful half term and keep being the amazing stars that you are!

Also- for those celebrating, have a beautfiul Eid celebration with your family! Make sure you send in lots of pictures!:)

BIG BIG BIG SMILES!

Emily :)xx

Mental Health Awareness Week Day 4

21/5/2020

Picture
Good morning,

It is DAY 4 of the Mental Health Awareness Week Challenge!

I hope you liked the Olaf video! I had some good feedback on my PM that some of you found it very comforting to watch.

Yesterday I had such a productive day - I got up really early and went for a run around the local park. worked on the blogs, posted some stuff on Twitter and finished my day with some wonderful phone calls with some of the children in my class! It always cheer me up hearing how you are and what you have been up too!

Zakiya in Y4 said has been completeing some of the ELSA blog work and I was thrilled to hear that! :) Well done I am glad you are enjoying it.

Yesterday when I was running I felt so empowered, but I had to DRAG myself out of bed to get there but it was SO worth it.

You wont regret it :)

Big Smiles - Take Care!

Emily
You all know how being active is also linked to having a good mental health. I know it is sometimes difficult to do things in your house but try to do at least 1 hour of focused exercise a day. Whether you run on the spot, go for a long walk, ride your bike around your estate or park, just try to get some activity back into your routine as safely as you can!

ELSA KIND TO YOURSELF CHALLENGE DAY 4

Some people like writing down their thoughts and feelings as it is a way to express worries onto paper!

I know some of you already have a diary which you use to express yourself or document how your day went.

Today's task is thinking about 'What went well?' - It's so important to look for the positives in every day and recognise what small achievements you have made.

You can
also make your own diary on today's challenge either using Purple Mash tools or one at home using paper :)

Kindness Cup Nominations...
Salma nominated Syedi in Year 6! Well done Syedi! You are doing SO well! :)

Alice has also nominated Tanisha for asking how she was whilst on a phonecall home :) What a lovely selfless thing to do Tanisha - Well done :)

Mental Health Awareness Week - Day 3

20/5/2020

Good morning sunshines,

This week I am doing a daily blog because it is 'Mental Health Awareness Week' and I really want you all to think about how you can look after your own mental and physical well-being during these times.

Today I will be talking about how being more hopeful will help you to be happier!

Picture
But first I would like you to watch this video called ' I Am With You' by Olaf. It’s such a wonderful song, written from the point of view of Olaf as he is composing a letter to an unnamed friend about how much he misses them and can’t wait to see them again.

I love this song because it is so positive and shows that although we may not be beside someone physically we always are there for people because we CARE!

Hope you enjoy my blog today!
Take care..Big smiles!

Emily :)

Being hopeful

Being hopeful means believing things can be better.

It doesn't always mean things will be better but having that little bit of hope that things COULD be better makes us feel much happier.

Having a little bit of hope is changing our thoughts from negative to positive.

It's about saying I CAN instead of I CAN'T - it's about saying things may be difficult right now  but hopefully things MAY get better and that's what you should focus on.

So try to think about how you can change your negative thoughts or words to positive.

Think about how you can plan something to have a POSITIVE outcome and what steps you need to take to get there.

You'll get there - I believe in you.

Mental Health Awareness Week.

19/5/2020

Picture
 Good morning everybody,

It's DAY 2 of Mental Health Awareness Week!

I want you to really think about what kindness means to you?

I think that the true meaning of kindness is when you choose to do something for yourself or someone else that you know will be positive and uplifting to whatever the situation is. I believe true kindness comes from the heart and it's often those moments when someone opens a door for you, let's you sit down on a packed train, notices someone is sad and invites them to play in a game, or when someone gives you a compliment that really matters.

Here is a small story of  kindness I have seen at VPS...
(although there are LOTS I have chosen this one!)

Ariya in Year 2 will notice and open a door for me if I am trying to get through (I often have lots of equipment or folders of some sort in my hands !) as Year 4 and 2 classrooms are next door so we often see the lovely Year 2. Ariya will ALWAYS say 'Hello Emily' and she never forgets to say ''Thank You'' if I am holding a door and I always think that she shows remarkable kindness to others. Nobody has asked Ariya to do what she does- she just does it because she knows that it's respectful and a kind thing to do. I don't even think she knows she does it sometimes!

Kindness forms itself in different ways but I think it's those little moments of someone looking out for another person that really counts!

Today I am going to talk about two things you can get involved with..

The 'Place 2Be'  Kindness Cup and the Day 2 ELSA challenge!

Place2Be's Kindness Cup

For #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we're celebrating acts of kindness in our school. Is there a staff member or a friend/family member you think is really kind?

Let me know who and what they have done so we can celebrate their kindness with a @Place2Be Kindness Cup!

These people will be awarded a virtual certificate and placed on Twitter!  All you need to write is ''I nominate  __________ for _________''. You can email into admin@virgnia.towerhamlets.sch.uk or on Purple Mash!

Kindness and mental health are deeply connected. At this difficult time, we want to celebrate the many examples of exceptional kindness we are seeing through our schools, as people go above and beyond to make a positive difference for the members of their school community. Our virtual 'Kindness Cups' are a way to celebrate the incredible acts of kindness taking place across our school communities.

Picture
Yousif in Year 4 has kicked off the kindness cup awards by sending in a nomination for Sam in Year 4! Well done Sam!

Kalid also very kindly nominated Salma and I for an award :) Thank you Kalid it was really nice to read.

Day 2 of ELSA Challenge...

Today you can write or draw about a mistake you may have made today (or yesterday).

It is really important to our mental health when we forgive ourselves for mistakes we may have made. Everybody makes mistakes - there is nobody who is perfect!

We can always learn from our mistakes!

Follow the layout below! :)

Mental Health Awareness Week

18/5/2020

Picture
Hello all,

I hope you have had a wonderful weekend! Did you do anything nice? I took part in a fabulous quiz with my family for my Dad and brother's birthday. (That's my brother Alfie in the photo) I am missing them so much but I hope to see them soon.

When I really miss them, I just try to think of all the really happy times we've had and how we can have many more when it is safe to do so. I bet some of you are missing family members too. I am so grateful for technology - it has enabled us to connect which is so important for all of us to have a healthy mind.

This week is 'Mental Health Awareness Week' - and the theme is 'KINDNESS'. Across your class blogs and Purple Mash there will be a focus on 'kindness' and the importance of talking about how you feel and focusing on looking after your own mental health.

What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. (mentalhealth.org)

How is Mental Health and Kindness connected?  (adapted from mentalhealth.org.uk)

Kindness is defined by doing something towards yourself and others  to make a positive difference.  We know from the research that kindness and our mental health are deeply connected.  It helps reduce stress, brings a fresh perspective and deepens friendships. Kindness to ourselves help boost our self-esteem.  Kindness can even improve feelings of confidence.
I will be posting a 5-day ELSA challenge all around KINDNESS that the lovely Debbie has created for children across the world. Today - think about all the things you do today that YOU deserve a compliment for.

For example- waking up on time, conquering a tricky maths problem,  being kind to your sibling etc.

Mirror mirror on the wall...who has shown the greatest mindset of them all!

15/5/2020

Picture
Good morning everyone,

I hope that you are all OK ! Thank you for sharing your wonderful words, thoughts, memories, poems about Lizzie.  They were truly heartwarming and we will be sure to pass on your wonderful words to her family.

Today I want to talk to you about 'MINDSET'. Some of you will be familiar with the term 'GROWTH MINDSET' as it's something we focus on a lot at school to ensure we get the very best out of our learning.

I don't have an activity for today's blog post but it's something I want you to read and reflect on for next week.

MINDSET:  mind-set - noun -an attitude, disposition, or mood.

No, but seriously...I really CAN.

Picture
How many of you have felt like this picture of an egg during our time at home.

I know I have - I have had days where I have been SUPER productive and had a really positive mindset and days where I just really couldn't get myself motivated.

I TOTALLY understand that this is a really challenging time for you all right now...BUT I want you to think about your mindset to your learning and how we can improve it!

Learning at home is VERY different to learning at school but it's all about YOUR attitude which will make it either a positive or very negative experience.

You need to have some strategies in place for when you have days where you think you CANT do it!

Teachers and TA's are always ready to answer any questions you may have about the learning - whether it's through email or purple mash.

You can also HELP YOURSELF to develop a better growth mindset. You can change your words like the picture I have included below.

You can also help yourself by having a routine and trying har to stick to it. You will have days where your learning may be disrupted but its all about how you get back on tarck that counts.

We are super proud of all of you, and I know that sometimes laying down on your bed like Mr Egg will happen but you CAN do it and you have our support.

Have a lovely weekend and really think about how you can get your mindset back on track next week to ensure you are getting the very best out of your learning.

Big smiles!

Emily

Hello everyone,

As you may already know, we have some sad news that Lizzie, our very special staff member, has died.

I know most of you will have heard of cancer, and know that sometimes people with cancer get better, but other times people die from it.

Lizzie had been been ill with cancer for a long time and died peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

We have created some blogs for you on Purple Mash to talk about your own feelings,  and to talk openly about the relationship that you had with Lizzie.

Some of you may want to share a happy special memory that you have of Lizzie - something you will always remember and treasure.

I will also attach some activities you may like to do at home to help with how you're feeling.

We are all here for you if you need us.

Did you know... that YOU are a HERO!

11/5/2020

Picture

Hello everybody,

It has been a little while since I wrote a blog post as it has been the bank holiday weekend! I have been spending time with my family who I live with  and have spent some time in the kitchen baking....( I will tell you more about this soon).

On VE Day, I went for a long walk as part of my daily exercise. I was lucky enough to see the RAF Red Arrows Fly Over - it was brilliant.  I have uploaded some photos for you to see.
It really was a wonderful day  to remember the great heroes who fought and those who lost their lives in conflict for our country.

What have you been up to over the weekend? Have you learnt anything new? We really love to see your photos!

Big smiles!

Emily :)

Today my blog is all about YOU and to thank you for being a 'Stay At Home Hero!'

Picture

Did you know that YOU are infact a hero too?

I know that is a really difficult time for you all - and I know that sometimes it really is difficult to get yourself motivated as learning at home is so different from learning at school but YOU are a hero in this situation.
(We will be looking at mindset later in the week).

YOU have had to be so brave.

It has been a strange time but YOU are still doing your best.

YOU have had to deal with so many changes - BIG changes that even us adults are having to deal with.

Keep on being the BEST you can be!

Below is a poem that I wanted to share with you all.

Hello everybody,

I hope you've had a lovely weekend with your family.
The weather hasn't been as great has it? To be honest, I've quite enjoyed the rain. It's very calming sitting on the sofa listening to the rain hitting the window whilst enjoying a cup of tea and too many biscuits (haha)!

Today I want to show you a resource that you might like...
(parents I will attach a link so you can print out if you need to).

As you all know, we are living through extraordinary times!
This time of our lives will go down in  history  and you have been part of this history so why not document it?

You can use this resource as a start and if you cant print  it out NO problem! Make your own! Use the ideas, get a shoe-box and fill it with lots of different things to do with what is happening at the moment!

I hope you have fun with this!

Self care? What is Self Care?

Hello my wonderful VPS family!

I hope the timetables on my previous post were useful for you and now you can start to structure your day better!I have found that having a routine for the day helps me to stay calm and on task? Does it help you too? It's so important to have a work/play balance in your day! Make sure you do at least one thing you love in a day! Today I want to talk about the different forms of SELF CARE!

What is self care?
'
Self care is taking care of yourself, whether that be physically or mentally, it doesn’t mean you’re selfish if you do things in a manner that pleases you, instead of others. Self care can be done by yourself, or with other people' - Children's Society.

Self care is taking part in any activity that makes YOU feel happy!

There are SO many ways you can take care of yourself. We know the importance of being physically healthy (exercise, staying fit, eating well) but keeping mentally healthy is very important too.

Self care will look very different for each and every one of you!

Getting up, brushing your teeth, having a wash, eating breakfast is an important start to self care ( it will make you feel fresh and ready to start the day).

A routine/schedule will be enough self care for some of you as it might make you feel more in control of your day! However some of you may...

  • read a book in a quiet corner.
  • draw and doodle for an hour
  • have a cuddle from a relative in your home.
  • paint your nails
  • get stuck into a task
  • connect with a friend on social media
  • build something from crafts/lego
  • have a long relaxing bath!
  • watch a favourite film
  • Sit quietly and think of a happy place!
  • write down thoughts and emotions
  • List all the things that make you great!
  • listen to a song
  • Eat a favourite snack

The list is endless on what you can do to take care of yourself - mentally and physically! We are all unique on what makes us feel happy and how we love and appreciate ourselves.

I have attached a link to a ELSA support document which talks about having an A to Z  of Self Care! On this link you can print out a blank one and create your own :)

How can you make sure you include Self Care in your day! You can show me on Purple Mash or send in your photos to admin@virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk.

Time for a Home School Timetable?

27/4/2020

Hello everyone,

First of all, Ramadan Mubarak to those who are observing this holy month! Breaking fast with your families must be such a special time and I am sending my best wishes to you all.

The sunshine has been glorious this weekend, I have really enjoyed pottering about in the garden making it look tidy and pretty again. My friend is currently growing a sunflower for me! I LOVE sunflowers - they just put such a smile on my face :)

How was your weekend? Did you have a nice time? I know lots of you have been baking and doing different arts and crafts. I love to see your updates on Purple Mash!

Big smiles!
Emily

Today I want to talk to you about the importance of timetables/routine for our mental health and well-being!

See the timetables below!!
Picture
Picture

Is home learning a bit difficult? Read below on how a timetable may help you!

Life is different at the moment and our days may be really stressful. For your parents it is different too. They will try to help you learn and  try to make sure that the home school learning is being completed but it might not always go to plan (which is OK-  things happen as we know!). For children it may feel like you have lots to do but no idea on how to complete it all and how to structure your day!

Having a timetable/routine to help structure your day is really good for your mental health.  It can make you feel more in control of your day and can make you feel like you have achieved your tasks!

A normal school day is designed around a timetable to make sure that we cover as much as the curriculum (different subjects) as as possible. Timetables help us to understand what we will be doing. We also use them so there is a fair spread of activities to keep children engaged and make sure that children spend the right amount of time on each subject.

I have designed some timetables (one for KS1 and one for KS2) to help you create a home school schedule, routine or timetable that works for you when home learning! I will attach the files so you can download and adapt how you would like.

Parents - This is only a suggestion of how a home learning  could be structured. Use only if needed :)

For parents/carers:

The Education Endowment Foundation (EFF) have produced a series of checklists to help parents and children manage their routines.

Supporting home learning routines: Planning the day
https://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/public/files/Publications/Covid-19_Resources/Resources_for_parents/Supporting_home_learning_routines_-_Planning_the_day.pdf

All the EEF materials to support home learning can be found here: https://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/covid-19-resources#nav-covid-19-resources
Family Time activities can be anything from completing a puzzle, baking a cake, having a circle time together, debating a topic or just general play.

We encourage this if you have time to do so.
It may be a nice way to connect as a family and take a break from the worries of the world.
Physical Activity is also really important for your mental and physical well-being.

There are lots of things you can do at home. There are many YouTube PE lessons etc to follow.

A walk is suggested and encouraged  but parents this is ultimately your decision.

5 a day Well-being

23/4/2020

Good morning everyone,

I hope you are well.  This sunshine is such a gift at a time like this - I have been enjoying pottering about in my garden and then I spent the afternoon baking.
I made my first ever banana loaf! What have you been baking? We would love to see! Upload your yummy food on Purple Mash or send it in!

I am trying to upload my blog every few days as I know how busy you are with your incredible class learning but I like to give you some things that I think may help your well-being throughout this time.

As you know  there are lots of rainbows, as a symbol of gratitude or hope, around at the moment. The lovely Debbie at ELSA support has created a resource that combines well-being and rainbows.

The 5 a day for well-being is really helpful at the moment for everyone. You can read about it here on the MIND website (for parents and carers). Below it explains the 5 a day approaches you can take to look after your own wellbeing.

Children you can colour the rainbow for your window and use one of the small ones each day to colour in each time you manage to achieve one of the aims!

DO NOT worry if do not have a printer! I've included a YouTube video for you to draw your own rainbow. After you have drawn your rainbow you can label it, and add colour to it each time you manage to achieve one of the well-being aims. :)

Take care everyone! Keep washing your hands!

Meditation Matters

21/4/2020

How meditation could help you!

Hello everybody!

I hope you are now settled into home learning after the Easter holidays. Some of you might be flying through the work set for you but some of you might be struggling. If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed I would like you to try something called 'meditation'.

Our minds can sometimes be a busy and challenging place to be. Our thoughts can whirl around our head - good thoughts and bad. We may begin to think about the future - but that is not worth stressing too much over as we don't know what could happen in the future! You might also think about things you wish you didn't do in the past - but we cant do much to change that either!

Picture
Hope you like this picture! I haven't drawn in a while.
Meditation can help us to quieten down these thoughts that make us not feel so good. It can make you feel calm and peaceful which is great for your mind and allows you to have a better day!

You can meditate in lots of different ways - It might feel quite weird at first but I am sure you will get the hang of it!

Go and find somewhere in your house that is a quiet place... I know this may be tricky but see if you can!  Now close your eyes.....

1. Think of a word or a sound that you find calming... It could me 'laaaaaaaa' or 'flower'. Say it softly in your head over and over again.

2. Start at 20 and slowly count down to zero with each deep breath you take.

3. Imagine you are in your happy place. It can be somewhere made up or somewhere you know. What can you see, hear, feel, smell?! Spend some time there in your mind.

Here is a video you may like to play whilst you meditate. It is beautiful and gives you a task to follow too.
I hope you try some meditation in your daily routines!

A new term...

First Blog of Summer Term!

Picture
Hello everybody,

I hope that you all had a restful and enjoyable Easter even if it may of felt a little bit strange. It really is a time where we might feel as if everything is a bit 'strange' or 'different'. If you are feeling like that, you are not alone. A lot of children,  adults too, will be having the same thoughts as you.

I have shared and will continue to share ways you can manage these feelings over the next few weeks in my blog and on Purple Mash.

I have put some photos of what I have been up to on my blog today. As you know I have asthma ( I know some of you have asthma too as we've shared how we look after our condition) so I have to be really careful when I go outside. I need to wear a mask (my neighbour made me a leopard print one!) and sometimes I wear gloves (If I don't wear them I wash my hands lots and try not to touch anything but the handles of my bike) but I have been going outside for an hour a day on my bike to not only look after my physical health but its a really good way to look after my mental health too.

I have put some photos of what I have seen whilst on my travels around where I live.

Can you spot Canary Wharf?

Picture
There was an incredible display of rocks with heartwarming messages on a river bank close to my house that really made me smile.
They were made by a group of families who are from my community. What a lovely thing to do!

Something I also want to share is that we have some new children joining our VPS family! A big warm welcome to you all.

VPS children - I have created a 'welcome' blog on Purple Mash (Emily's ELSA Blog) for you to share your thoughts and introduce yourselves and our school.

Remember...
Teachers and support staff are still here to listen to you if you need us. Purple Mash has been such a great way of connecting with different pupils across the school! If you are still unsure of how to use Purple Mash at home let your teachers know by contacting us by email  admin@virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk
and we can hopefully sort it out for you.

Take Care - Big Smiles!

Good morning lovely people!
Wow I cannot believe that another term is over! Even though spring term has been difficult there has still been lots of learning and memories made before we had to close the school.  For many of us, the Easter holiday will feel very strange but it is still a time for you to switch off, enjoy family time and do all the little things in life that bring you some happiness!

I will still be available on Purple Mash so you can check in on my ELSA blog there! I will try to give you more P4C questions and different tasks you can do if you wish too!

However I would like to leave you with this for the Easter Holidays!
This is a resource from ELSA to support families at home that don’t have the facility for printing.
There are 30 different prompts to do something throughout April. This will help to keep you children busy and to continue to look after your well-being.

Bucket List Jar!

2/4/2020

Picture
Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is OK!

I am super excited as my keyboard is arriving today!

I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano, but I have never had the time - so I am planning to use my free time at the moment practising as much as I can!  What new skill would you like to learn?
You might be learning a new skill at the moment -
I would love to know what you are learning.
Post on my ELSA blog to share if you are!

The VPS team really love connecting with you on Purple Mash!
All of your wonderful learning is bringing smiles to us all.

Today I would like to share with you something I saw online.

It's an 'End of Isolation Bucket List Jar'. (example below)

To do this activity follow these instructions :
  • Find a jar of any kind ( you can also use a box, container etc) that has a lid.
  • Write down all the things you would like to do when things start to go back to how they were.
  • Everytime you or a member of your family want to go somewhere or want to visit a certain relative you can add it to your jar!

The best bit about this jar....Once we are allowed to go out again you can pick one thing at a time to go and do as a family! :)

Take care!
Big Smiles :)

Laugh your socks off!

31/3/2020

Picture

Good morning everyone,

Last night I watched a very funny animated video on YouTube with audio from Matt Lucas! I have attached the video below. It really made me laugh (even now it is circling around my head....''Thank you Baked Potatooo'') I LOVE IT!

I love laughing-  as you all know! I like to be silly and I often get many eye rolls from my class - especially when I do the maths dance when a child has a ''I GET IT NOW'' moment or when I am singing different Disney songs around the tables (or that silly ''Taco's'' song that Year 4 love to sing!)

It is so good to laugh. But why?

Why laughter is good for your health?
  1. Laughter releases a chemical called serotonin (say sera-tow-nin) into our brains. This is often called the 'feel good' hormone because that is the effect it has on our feelings.
  2. Laughter is a way we can be a part of a group and it can make us feel more comfortable with others.
  3. Laughter stops us feeling stressed and leads to our bodies working better and feeling relaxed :)

So - this video has got me thinking...

Why don't you try to make your own silly song up? It could be with the message of how to stay safe against corona virus or could just be anything you like! You could rap, sing, yodel... Just have some fun!

You could try making a new version of the Baked Potato song dedicated to your favourite food!

For example...

Super noooooodles....changed my life
Super nooooodles....showed me the way
If you want to know what is wrong from right
You must listen to what Super Noodles say....

Just have some fun!

You could even put on a concert in your living room for family members!

Just HAVE fun!

Big Smiles
Emily
P.s I miss you all lots!

I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too...

 Good morning to you all,

I hope you are well - and if you are not feeling to good I am sending you a BIG hug! (Parents - One for you too!)

Something that has really made me smile is seeing pictures of rainbows in people's windows. This movement has been started by children in a bid to spread hope and happiness during this difficult time. Some have also had a message of thanks to doctors and nurses who are trying so hard to keep everyone healthy and well.

So for my blog post is for you at home to make some beautiful rainbows for your windows!
(Make sure you have an adults permission before you put it up so they can help you)
My godson has made a great one and has kindly sent me some photos to show us all :)

You might have already created one so send them in as I would love to see them!

Another thing you might like to do is something called a 'My Strengths Cloud'.

All the NHS staff are showing lots of different strengths such as kindness, empathy, love, determination as they help lots of different people. You may be finding the work of these doctors and nurses inspiring - so what better way to reflect on your own strengths so that you can remind yourself that one day you may be supporting others just like these inspirational people.

Some children may have made these with me before in 'ELSA' or 'The Space' but they are a really lovely reminder of what your strengths are.

They are super easy to make - Cut out a cloud shape, and some coloured strips - write on your strengths  and attach any way you would like.

Parents, if you're reading this.. it is so important for your child to
recognize their strengths. It is just as important as working on their challenges. Here’s an artsy/crafty way to celebrate all that your child has either achieved or what they thinks about themselves. Working together will help both of you see your child’s strengths and how they link together. If they find it difficult you can help them along by letting them know what you think their strengths are!

Enjoy getting creative

Mindfulness Mantra Cards

27/3/2020

Picture

Good Morning Everybody!

I hope you are feeling happy :)

I have seen some of your amazing work on Purple Mash , I am so pleased you're having fun with your learning! It is also amazing how much the home learning blogs are inspiring you to be creative in most subjects! The teachers are creating fabulous blogs for you all!

Today I have another activity for you to do!

 Mindfulness Mantra Cards!
What is a 'mantra' you may ask:
a word or phrase that is often repeated and expresses a particular strong belief
.

I would like you to create some of your own 'Mindfulness Mantra' cards!

What is your superpower? What can you do? What message would you like to say to yourself to give you more self belief?

The positive message on your card could be put up on display in your bedroom or used as a bookmark to remind you of how amazing you are and to remind you to accept a mistake and move on.

It is important to have strong self belief and to be kind to our own mind.  Having a 'mantra' is good to use when you may be feeling a bit down or stressed. You might even want to start your day by saying your mantra! Repeating the mantra can help you think more positively when you need to have a personal minute to calm down.

There are some examples below that you can use for inspiration!

My Happy Place

25/3/2020

 Good evening everyone,

I hope you’re OK. I spent most of my day in the garden soaking up the sunshine, working on my laptop and reading my new book. It was so quiet but I quite enjoyed the sounds of nature around me. It is slowly becoming ‘My Happy Place’ at the moment.

The teachers and support staff have been sharing emails which have also been making me smile! Especially the photo of Salma with a fake cat on head!

Remember it’s really good to be in contact with family and friends. If you can Face Time your relatives (with permission from your parents/carers) do it, or comment on the Purple Mash blogs, keep sending in your work!

If you only have limited time on your computer/device you could always write letters to your friends, family, teachers and bring them with you when the time comes for us all to return back to school.
Tomorrow I would like you to think about your ‘Happy Place’.

I have a found a lovely ELSA worksheet to help you along. It could be real or somewhere from your imagination.  I want you to use this drawing to help you picture your happy place whenever you are feeling a bit sad or lonely so it can put a smile on your face and remind you of happy thoughts!

Big Smiles!
Take care
Emily!
Picture
Picture
Here are some things to consider when drawing your happy place:
  • What is the setting of your happy place?
  • What would be in your happy place?
  • Who would be in your happy place?
  • What colours can you see?
  • What can you hear?
  • What can you smell?
  • What can you feel?
  • What can you taste?
If you can't print the sheet out just draw it on a plain piece of paper!

I would like to see some of them sent into admin@virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Get Moving a With Joe Wicks

24/3/2020

Hi everyone,
I hope you’ve had a lovely day.

The teachers and TA’s  have been sharing emails with each other today which has been lovely.

This post is to encourage you to get moving whilst you’re at home. You all know that to look after our mental health we also have to look after our physical health too.

Something I have seen that’s been very popular is PE with Joe Wicks on YouTube!

It is so much fun and it’s such a good workout. Clear a space in your house and copy the routines from the tablet or TV.

I did it this morning in my kitchen and it made me feel so good! You can watch me on the video I have posted...

Today's video is also linked below - you can check out the rest The Joe Wicks You Tube channel

Emily Workout from Virginia Primary School on Vimeo.

Picture
If you can’t get on to YouTube why don’t you make your own special exercise routine?

For example
  • 20 star jumps
  • 30 second breath break
  • 30 seconds of planking
  • 30 seconds breath break.
  • 20 heel kicks....
  • 30 seconds breath break
  • 20 squats....

So on so on...

BUT...make sure you warm up and stretch first. Your older siblings or parents could support with that! And remember to cool down too.

Hope you’re all well
Big smiles
Emily :)

Investigating Families

24/3/2020

 Hello everyone,

I hope you are OK and had a wonderful weekend.

I went back to school today to work with the Key Workers children. It was so wonderful to see some familiar faces and see the other members of team VPS.

It made me hopeful that things will start to improve and when it is safe enough, we can all be together again having lots of fun and learning lots!

I hope that my previous blog post made you feel a bit better about what is going on in the world. You can always speak to us on Purple Mash if you need to talk about your worries.

Today on my blog - I have an activity for you!
Picture
Picture
Picture

This activity was inspired by Stonewall and I think you might enjoy it.

This activity will help you to learn more about your own family and celebrate different types of families.

I hope you like it! You can upload it to the ELSA blog or send to Joan if you would like to share it :)

Have a great day!

Be safe, be kind, be YOU!

Emily :)

Instructions

Draw your family.
Start with the people you live with, then add other members of your extended family if you have them.  Family doesn’t have to be people you are related to by birth – who feels like family to you?
  • Do you have any cousins? If so how many?
  • Do you have any step family?
  • Who is the oldest person in your family?
  • How many generations back in your family can you find out about?

Think about some other families.
  • What are the other families on your street like?
  • What are your friend’s families like?
  • What about families you know from books or TV?
  • How many different sorts of families can you think of? For example: families with a mum and dad; two dads; one-parent families; single child families; step families; foster families; families living with grandparents, etc.

Draw a family tree for someone whose family is quite different to yours.
You could draw your friends family or your neighbours!

Extra challenge :
Create a short video using your pictures talking about what families have in common and what makes them different to each other. What different challenges and opportunities might different families face? You could interview some of your family or friends and find out about their experiences of family.
