PE and sport are a very important part of our learning at Virginia Primary School. We know that physical activity makes us feel fantastic and is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle but it is also a great way of putting our values into action.
We participate in many inter and extra curricular sports competitions and were awarded the Bronze Mark from Sainsbury's School Games for all of our dedication to Sports during 2014-2015. Congratulations everyone our school has achieved Silver Level Mark!
What is the School Games Mark? The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in England are able to assess themselves across bronze, silver and gold levels I am so pleased to announce that Virginia has been awarded the SILVER MARK and have been upgraded from Bronze! To be awarded bronze was such an achievement but silver has really shown our growth as a school and our commitment to sport! 2017-2018
Every year I write on this page to express how proud I am of the children for going above and beyond. This year has been no different.
2017-2018 has been filled with many achievements, lots of new exciting learning and memorable sport trips. One of my favourite memories from this year was taking Year 6 to Wembley to watch the SSE Women's FA Cup Final.
Our children are so passionate for Sport at VPS and I have seen such an improvement in how the children interact with each other during sessions in PE, Pitch and the playground. We received great curriculum support lessons from THYSF and the staff have really made an effort to deliver high quality PE lessons.
Year 1 have especially been a joy to watch during their PE lessons...I can see some rising stars brewing! I would also like to congratulate all the classes who have stepped out of their comfort zones and achieved their target of swimming over 25m! We had some children who swam 500m and above.
We have taken part in many competitions throughout the year and have also participated in a few friendlies hosted by Bigland Green. The children love the chance to challenge other schools and it is a great way to motivate the children and focus them on reaching a good result. Pitch time is used to train for competitions and I am always so impressed with how much effort the children put in! The Sports Leaders have been a HUGE part of how well our students have performed this year due to their dedication and leadership skills. I am very grateful to have had such an incredible team helping me out. You are all stars and I know you will be a credit to any team/project you become a part of at secondary school.
Our main achievements this year as as follows:
1st Place - Tower Hamlets Girls Indoor Kwik-Cricket Competition took place at UEL Sports Dock.
2nd Place - Handball THYSF - Langdon Park (Silver Medallists)
1st Place - Tower Hamlets Girls Outdoor Kwik-Cricket Competition - Victoria Park
2nd Place - ParaGames (Bronze Medallists)
2nd Place - Year 3/4 Tower Hamlets Mixed Outdoor Kwik-Cricket Competition - Victoria Park
It was very hard to think of just one person to receive the Sports Award for 2018. After a lot of thought I decided to choose two children for different reasons.
Shahriar S- Year 6 - received the award for being an excellent role model to all of his peers and younger children. He is not only talented at most sports but one of the most kindest and positive children I’ve ever had the pleasure of teaching. His ideas for the pitch are fresh and exciting, he always uses his initiative and he empowers others to be the best they can be. He is a born leader and in his role of sports leader he’s flourished even more. I know he will go on to great things!
Amirah S -Year 6 - received the Sport Award for 2018 for how she has used sport at VPS as a way to positively improve her confidence . With her new found confidence she has gone on to excel in every sport in a fair and collaborative way. She shows passion and encourages others to be the best they can be which is so rewarding to see. She has an incredible talent for cricket and has captained two teams to win both Borough competitions this year due to her focus and drive to succeed. She chose the Year 3/4 cricket teams from observation and they went on to the finals and placed 2nd. She thoroughly deserves this award and I am very proud of her.
I am looking forward to see what 2018-2019 will bring! Well done VPS!
Emily :)
2016-2017
2016-2017 was possibly the most memorable year in terms of sporting achievements. We took part in over 15 competitions and represented Tower Hamlets for the Cricket competition at the London Youth Games placing 3rd out of all the best teams in LONDON! I would also like to congratulate all the classes who have stepped out of their comfort zones and achieved their target of swimming over 25m! We had some children who could swimming 500m and above! Amazing! Please see the power point below of all of our other fantastic achievements last year.
I would also like to say a BIG thank you to the sports leaders who were a great help in supporting in all areas of our sports ethos. They all participated in their role with enthusiasm and made a huge difference to the confidence and ability of our students ! They led amazing sessions for the younger children and organised our annual Sports Day. I hope you take your leadership skills with you to secondary school and make a difference to the lives of others in Sport.
PE has also been better than ever at VPS - Year 2 had 10 weeks worth of Gymnastics teaching from THYSF, Year 4/5 have enjoyed Tennis with Lee, I (Emily) taught an exciting unit of Dance to Year 5/6 and Jahid and other many other coaches gave us excellent support in our focus sport of CRICKET.
Lastly I would like to congratulate Soumia from Yr 6 who won the Sports Award for this year. Soumia has truly left a legacy behind at VPS. Since the age of 6 , when I first saw her talent, I knew she was going to be someone special. Across the years she has displayed so much passion, determination and technical talent in every PE lesson, competition or activity to do with sport. She participated in many competitions, including captaining the girl’s school football team for the last few years. She was an amazing asset to the Sports Leaders, working alongside myself and her peers to run her own sessions. . She would always captain her team with love and encouraged their fighting spirit. Soumia also had the capability of getting her classmates or others to bond with each other in a respectful way through sport. The younger children saw her as a strong female role model and developed a better mindset towards sport because of her. She will be an absolute asset to any team she joins and I hope she goes on to be very successful in her future in Sport.
We will really miss you.
Lets see what 2017-2018 is going to bring!

2015-2016 - A year to remember
In the blink of an eye another year has passed us by, and I couldn't be more proud of the students at Virginia! Not only have we attended over 15 competitions around the borough,we have won some of them too.
This year, as part of the Sainsbury School games, we decided to introduce Sport Leaders into the school and what a great idea that was! The sports leaders were the wonderful and responsible Zahra, Fred, Sajidah, Ihsan and Tarteela (Year 6) and Uzman, Yasir, Yusra and Joanna (Year 5). They have been excellent and have participated in their role with enthusiasm and taken on a lot of responsibility! They led sessions for the younger children and helped to organise our annual Sports Day which was Olympic themed! It was a fantastic day enjoyed by children and staff!
The highlights of this year include winning both the Indoor and Outdoor Girls Kwik-Cricket competitions, our handball team winning their competition with an excellent performance, over 5 children chosen to play for district cricket, and our fantastic BMX and Olympic Games experience at the Olympic Park! Not forgetting our amazing results from having intensive swimming sessions. Well done to all the classes who have stepped out of their comfort zones and achieved swimming over 25m! We had some children who could swimming 500m and above! Amazing!
PE has also been better than ever at VPS - Year 2 had 10 weeks worth of Gymnastics teaching from THYSF, Year 4 have enjoyed Tennis with Lee, I (Emily) taught an exciting unit of Dance to Year 5/6 who put on a fantastic performance in November supported by Sophia Loi (dance coach from THYSF).
A very special mention to Tahmina Yr 6 who won the Sports Award for this year. She gave 100% in every PE lesson and was successfully part of many of the winning teams who represented Virginia in competitions. A talented defender in all sports she is both skillful and tactical and understands the game she plays well. I would also like to mention to Fred Yr6 and Soumia Yr5 - they have both worked incredibly hard this year. It hasn't gone unnoticed how much you both helped and encouraged people in the playground and the pitch.
I am very excited to see what the end of 2016 and 2017 is going to bring!

2014-2015
2014-2015 was a fantastic time for sport at Virginia. From observing the reflection journals, which children complete after competitions, I was extremely happy to read some of the comments. The children really enjoyed themselves and wrote how many of the competitions had affected them in a positive way and made them step out of their comfort zones. Last academic year we won the Year 6 Girls Football Cluster competition and the Year 5/6 Mixed Cricket Team came 4th overall out off 66 schools in the Borough! We took part in over 13 competition and events.
Fred, who was a Year 5 student at the time, has officially joined the district cricket team !
We are very proud of all our students at Virginia for their sporting achievements. Our children continuously show our school values during competitions and are willing to always show sportsmanship no matter what the outcome. I look forward to another exciting and active year in 2016
