Year 2 Class Blog 2020-2021

Term 1 Complete!

21/10/2020

Dear Parents,

We have reached the end of the first half term of Year 2! I've been very impressed by the children's ability to adapt to the new classroom set up and all the new routines we have in place at school. They have loved spending time with their friends this half term and I'm sure you'll agree they have earned a good rest over the half term.

Here are your very talented children performing their poetry slam video.
This week, in English, we have been learning how to edit, redraft and publish our written work. Here are some photos of the process!

I think you'll agree they've done a great job!

In Maths we have been learning how to use a number line to subtract.

Homework

You'll be pleased to hear that the children will not need to do any homework over the holidays.

We have sent extra books home and some of them will also have some Reading Challenge books to keep them busy.

If you would like to do some activities over the break, you can take some ideas from the Year 2 take away menu from this half term and do continue to support your child with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Next Half Term

Next term's topic will be 'Music Makers'.  You can prepare your child by discussing what their favourite song is, what kind of music they enjoy, how music effects their moods and emotions.

Maths next term will continue to develop their addition and subtraction strategies and move into using amounts of money as a medium through which to learn this. We will also be looking more explicitly at multiplication and division toward the end of next half term.

Thank you for all your support this half term while we have been figuring out new systems and procedures.
Have a restful and relaxing half term, stay safe!

Homework - Week 6!

14/10/2020

Week 6 has been a lot of fun and I can't believe we are about to enter the final week of the the first half term!
This week we have been busy re-writing the story 'Wild!' The children have done a great job and we are about to start the editing and publishing process. We have also been practising 'Sick' by Shel Silverstein for poetry slam next week.

In Maths we have been using base-ten equipment to add and subtract 2 digit numbers without crossing the tens boundary. This will form the foundation for when we begin teaching column addition and subtraction.

We have also been learning about food chains in Science. We have learned that the sun is the original source of energy for all life forms and that plants helpfully convert this energy into nutrients via photosynthesis.

Introducing... THE GREAT YEAR 2 READING CHALLENGE!

Picture
The children can bring copies of the book home with a book review.
When we have received a completed review they can tick it off their list!
We can't wait to see how they get on.

Maths Homework

Picture
These week we have been doing lots of counting in multiples of five. Once the children have coloured the multiples of 5 on this 100 square it would be fun to compare the pattern created to the patterns created on their 100 square from week 3, at the beginning of their homework books.

Spellings

As we are coming up to the last week of term, this week children should revise all their spellings from this half term and we will test them on 6 random spellings from the past few weeks. They should focus on practising any that they got wrong in the test or found tricky to learn.

We will hand out new spellings related to next half term's topic in the first week of next half term.

Have a safe and peaceful weekend,
Aoife, Pauline and Shyma

Homework Week 5

9/10/2020

Wow! We are flying through the first half term.
The children have been making great strides both academically and socially and we are really enjoying getting to know them as the weeks progress.

In English this week the children have been creating story maps to assist them with their retelling of the story 'Wild!' next week. Some children have jumped the gun and recreated their own story books at home! We love seeing what they have been working on at home so do continue to send it in. We also had a go at doing some drama and freeze framed the last page of the book. Can you tell who we are pretending to be?

In Maths we have moved onto addition and subtraction. This week we have been focussing on fact families and deriving information from simple number facts that we know. We will be moving on to using place value to add and subtract next week.

Spellings:

This week's spellings are:

enough

frustrated
tantrum
wrong
taught

BONUS WORD:
gnarled

These are all words that we will be using to rewrite WILD next week.

You may notice that your child has some different spelling words to those posted on the blog. If so, they are receiving spellings that are specifically catering to their individual spelling ability.

This week we have given the children some two times tables work. We highly recommend using some objects to show the children how two times tables work. You may wish to use pairs of socks, pieces of pasta (cooked or uncooked depending on how messy you feel like getting!), or any other small objects that you have lots of in your home.

The below image will support them up to 2 x 6 = 12.

That's all for now,
Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday morning.

The Mystery of the Vanishing Homework Blogs...

7/10/2020

Dear Parents,

The past two weeks' homework blogs were mysteriously archived and can be found here:

www.virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk/y2-home-learning-blog-2020

Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience.
This is a one off technical glitch and future Year 2 homework, news and information will continue to be posted on this Class Blog, not the archived Home Learning blog.

Many thanks for your understanding.

The Year 2 Team.
