1/10/2020

Hello there Year 6 who are at home!

We don't want you to miss out, so here is a few things you can do to keep up to date with us in class! You can spend the week completing the activities.

First thing is spellings! Here are our spellings for the week. Test yourself and also find the meanings of the words:

Literacy:
We are still reading Goodnight Mr Tom! It is getting really interesting. Read chapters 6,8, and 9 from the file below.  Summarise each chapter after you have read it.

Write about how Tom and Willie have changed as a characters since the beginning of the story. Use evidence in the story to help justify your ideas!

Chapter 9: Birthday Boy
  • Imagine being William on his 9th birthday! How do you think he felt? Write a recount of his day writing in the first person! What were his highlights? How did his day start? How did his day end?
  • You can email your work to me at  admin@virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk

  • Suddenly,
  • In the village,
  • By sunset,
  • At the  dinner table,
Maths:

We have been focusing on addition: Use your mental strategies to solve these:

462 +299 =
365 + 699 =
298 + 797 =

What strategies did you use?

Watch this video on column addition:

Take a look at some of these calculations: Which ones are correct and which ones are incorrect. Can you fix the ones which are wrong?

Have a go at this arithmetic paper too! Any you are unsure about, don't worry. We can go through them when you are back!

We are learning about WW2 and evacuation. What was evacuation and why did it happen?
Read about being an evacuee here:

Write a letter home as an evacuee.
What might you share with your family? Where have you been evacuated to?
How is your life different?
Watch the video below about WW2.
Create a propaganda poster to encourage mothers to evacuate their children because of the war.

In times without Internet or television, WW1 and WW2 propaganda posters were a powerful communication tool and an essential source of information.
WW1 was the first war where whole nations were fighting against each other and the public's perception of the war really mattered.
This meant that propaganda (used to try and make people think a certain way) was required in every country for a number of reasons:

  • To enlist support
  • To convince people about the justness of the cause
  • To strengthen the support of allies
  • To encourage hatred towards the enemy
  • To boost morale
WW1 AND 2 propaganda posters were also used to give people information about food and fuel substitutes and to remind them to conserve resources
