Fine Motor Fun

Nursery are always involved in lots of different fine motor activities throughout the day to ensure they are continuously developing their early writing and physical development skills in fun and engaging ways.

Construction indoors can enable children to develop their fine motor, problem solving and communication and language skills. Offering them lego, mobilo (as seen in the picture), duplo, wooden blocks or even small materials from around the home such as straws, lids, containers, hole punch, card can encourage them to construct and really build and strengthen the muscles in their arms and hands.

Model and encourage them to mark make their ideas, labels and designs of what they have built. Encourage them to enjoy writing for purpose at home.

Tweezers are a really fun way to develop your child’s fine motor and concentration skills. Encouraging them to use the tweezers to collect small household items encourages problem solving skills, critical thinking skills and perseverance. It develops awareness of number and shape and can even be used to develop children’s understanding of positional language. Can you use the tweezers to pick up the Pom poms and put them ‘under’ ‘on top’ ‘next to’ the table?

Cutting skills using scissors is so important in the early years. As early as possible encourage children to use scissors independently and encourage them to cut a variety of different things. Cut some circle shaped cucumber slices for them and allow them to use their clean scissors to cut the cucumber slices in half etc. Or encourage them to use their scissors to cut their playdough, straws, string, labels off their clothing, let them cut out their pictures themselves (even if they cut straight through the picture!). This is how they learn.

A really fun way to engage children and get them practising their cutting skills is to tie up their favourite toys in some string. Ask your child to be a superhero and free the toys by cutting the string off.

What fine motor activities can your children engage with over the Easter Holidays?
