Shapes

We’ve made lots of shapes ready for our zoom session. Can you make a picture using your shapes? What shapes are you using, can you name them? Let’s see how you describe them. Are they round, straight, pointy?

Picture

Rakhi made a spring flower using 4 small squares and 4 small circles. She used a big round circle in the middle and made a pattern for the petals. Square, circle, square, circle. Green, pink, green, pink. The two small rectangles are blue! The squares and rectangles aren’t round are they? Their sides look very straight!

Menu for the Farm Animals

We’ve been doing some lovely mark making at home. We’ve also been making and counting some Hen’s eggs!

Let’s invite some farm animals to our restaurant today! Can you set up a role play restaurant and mark make all the different foods for the farm animals?

Make your role play even more fun by using your farm animal face masks that you made! Ask the horse what she’d like to eat today!

Five Little Ducks

Let’s play with water today!

We can make some ducks. We can do junk modelling or draw the ducks on some paper/card. We can make mummy duck and her baby ducklings.

The ducks live in the pond on the farm! Can you make your ducks and put them in a tray of water?

You can sing our nursery rhyme ‘Five Little Ducks’, you can splash in the water and even use some containers, filling and emptying them. Water play is so much fun. You can learn so many things!

Hens

Have a look at the mummy hen and her baby chicks. A mummy chicken is called a hen and the daddy is called a rooster.

The video has no sound. Use your eyes to observe what is happening. What can you see? Use some full sentences and talk to your grown up.

Can you mark make a picture of a mummy hen and some chicks?

Listen to the sound of the baby chick chirping...
It’s a soft and gentle sound.

Let’s do more junk modelling today! Can you make and decorate a Hen using some empty boxes/containers? What other farm animals and their babies can you make?

Hen’s Eggs

We can have lots of fun today and make some pretend Hen’s eggs! We can make them using flour, water, salt and ground coffee. Then we can put them in the oven until they become hard.

Picture

Here is the recipe:

1-2 cups of flour
Salt
1 cup of water added gradually (use more if needed)
Used coffee grounds (optional)

Mix ingredients and roll to look like eggs. Heat in the oven at 180 degrees until hard.

You can add anything you like to make your Hen’s eggs, the more ingredients you add the more fun it will be for everyone!

Remember not all the Hen’s eggs are white!

Picture

Counting the Hen’s Eggs

When you’ve made the eggs you can make a nest, practice counting the eggs and finding the matching numbers.

Can you make different groups? A group of 3 eggs, a group of 5, maybe a big group of 10!

Talk to your grown up about what the eggs feel like and look like.

Listen to some farm animal sounds. Name the animals, describe them and the different sounds they make. Can you try making these sounds?

Piglets

Have a look at all these baby piglets that have been born during Spring. There’s so many different types! Can you describe the different piglets using some full sentences. What do they look like?

I can see a pink pig with black spots!

Can you use some empty boxes/containers to do more junk modelling? What other baby farm animals can you make today? Rakhi made a piglet.

Farm Adventure

Lets go on another farm adventure today! Watch some children visit a farm. What animals do they see? Talk to your grown up about your favourite farm animals and why you like them.

We can’t visit any farms at the moment but that doesn’t mean we can’t have our own farm adventure! We can make some farm animal face masks and imagine we’re at the farm.

You can wear your masks, make the noises and move your body like your favourite farm animals. Let’s do some farm animal yoga!

Can you draw your favourite farm animal?

Watch and listen to Rakhi talking about her baby lamb that she made. Can you talk about some of the farm animals that you know? Can you name them, what are their babies called? Have a go at making one of the baby farm animals that are born during Spring. You can use empty boxes, cardboard, containers, anything you can find at home.

Talk to your grown up and describe what your animal looks like, how many legs it has, where it lives on the farm and what it eats!

Messy Maths

Can you use your fingers to finger paint some spots on the cow? Like yesterday, choose a number from your pile of numbers, dip your fingers into the paint or chocolate sauce and count!

Oopsy! Rakhi drew a cow with only 3 legs!

How many legs does a cow have altogether?

How many more do we need to draw to make 4?

Where does the milk you drink come from?

Rakhi doesn’t drink animal’s milk she drinks oat milk. Her milk is made from oats! Watch a video to see one of the ways you can make it.

Mark Making a Farm

Can you mark make a picture of a farm today? Use as many different materials as you can from around your home/outside. Talk with your grown up about all the things you can see on a farm and draw the extra details. Maybe everyone at home can mark make a picture of one!

Supermarket Workers

We’ve become some fantastic engineers this week and today I want us to think about some of the other people who help us, there are so many! We’re going to be thinking about supermarket workers, dustbin collectors and cleaners today. They do a very important job and we must never forget about them. We must always say thank you to them.

Supermarket workers are always working to make sure that we are able to go and buy the food that we need to keep us happy and healthy. Can you help your grown up to mark make a shopping list today? Think about all the food that you need to buy and write it down, draw some pictures!

Rakhi wrote a shopping list.

Picture

Maybe you can do some role play with your family. Can you be the supermarket worker today? What healthy foods do you have? How much do they cost?

Parents, role play is the perfect opportunity to model writing, in the moment with your children and their interests.

Cleaners

Cleaners work in many different places. They keep us safe and healthy and make sure everything is nice and clean for us. Can you help your grown up do some cleaning today? Maybe you can help clean the dishes or clean the table? Maybe you can help sweep or hoover the floors?

Dustbin Collectors

We have different coloured bins outside our homes that we use to get rid of and recycle any waste, things we’re not using anymore. The dustbin collectors come in their vans and they collect and empty our bins for us. If they didn’t come things would get very messy!

What colour are your bins outside your home? Can you talk with your grown up about the different things you put inside each one?

Talk to your grown up about recycling and what this means. Have a look around your home, can you see paper, cardboard, plastic, glass?

Thank You

Let’s make a card to say thank you to all these special people who help us every day.

Picture

Happy Valentines Day

It is Valentines Day on Sunday. This is a special day to celebrate all the people we love.

Rakhi would like you to know that Mummies and Daddies are people who help us. They love us, they look after us and they teach us all the things that we need to know.

Can you mark make a Valentines Day Card for your family?

Making an a a a a apple soup

Can you help Rakhi to make an a a a apple soup. What can you see around your home that begins with the ‘a’ sound? You might need to draw some pictures with your grown up. Rakhi had to draw some of her own. Sing and join in!

Let’s get creative and get our fingers moving today.

Designing a flying ball machine

Good Morning Engineers. Today we can design a machine that shoots a ball into a cup! You, your grown up, your brothers and sisters can all make one and count how many times it lands in the cup. Mark make your design and talk about how it works. Rakhi did some mark making, she drew a picture of her machine and how it is going to work, have a look.

Picture

How far does my Aeroplane travel?

We can also design some aeroplanes today with our grown ups and measure how far they travel using some big leaps! When you fly your planes count how many BIG leaps you can make until you reach your aeroplane. Which aeroplane travels the furthest away?

Musical Instruments

Talk about the sounds these different musical instruments make. See if you and your grown up can find out the names of them.

Can you move your body to some music? What moves can you come up with?

Can you move your body to different music from around the world? What instruments can you hear?

Maybe you could try some colourful threading today?

Tuesday 9th February

Boat Adventure

Rakhi has designed and made a boat that moves by itself without pushing it. Can you try and design a boat with your grown up and make it move by itself? Mark make your adventures with your boat, tell people where it’s going and how it moves.

Musical Instruments

Yesterday we listened to the sounds some musical instruments make. Here are some of them. A Piano, Tambourine, Wood Maracas, Triangle and a Guitar.

Listen to these sounds below and guess which instrument from the pictures above is making the sound! Talk about the music you hear, which instrument is your favourite and why? What is the beat like, steady, slow/fast?

 Play Dough City

Can you use some matchsticks or lolly pop sticks (anything you can find at home) to connect your play dough together?

We can design a play dough city! We can make buildings, vehicles, people and we can mark make our design. Count how many bits of playdough you’ve used altogether.

Patterns

Picture

What objects will you use to make your pattern prints? Talk about the patterns you’re making and the colours you’re using.

Engineers

This week we are ending our topic on ‘People Who Help Us’ by thinking about Engineers.

What can you design and build today using your Lego/Duplo/Blocks other construction materials? Talk about what you’re building and how you’re building it and mark make your ideas. Grown ups you can build with them!

Mark making should be embedded everywhere, in all the activities they do. Children don’t need to sit at the table “to come and do some writing” we must bring the writing to them, in the moment, in fun and meaningful ways.

When they’re designing and building their Lego model, draw a picture of the pieces of Lego you’re using to build yours, model writing a simple design plan, a label for whatever it is that has been built.  This will encourage children to do the same and will encourage them to think of their own mark making ideas. We need to inspire writing not force.

Sorting and Grouping our Construction

We can sort and group our construction materials today. Choose how you’re going to sort them, into colours, maybe size? Count how many you have altogether in each group. Talk about which group has more/less/same.

Musical Instruments

We can listen to the sounds that some musical instruments make. Talk about these sounds and the difference between them. Are they loud/quiet? Are they making a high pitch sound or low? What is your favourite instrument and why?

If you have any musical instruments at home, play them and talk about the sounds you’re making!
