Tweezers are a really fun way to develop your child’s fine motor and concentration skills. Encouraging them to use the tweezers to collect small household items encourages problem solving skills, critical thinking skills and perseverance. It develops awareness of number and shape and can even be used to develop children’s understanding of positional language. Can you use the tweezers to pick up the Pom poms and put them ‘under’ ‘on top’ ‘next to’ the table? |
Cutting skills using scissors is so important in the early years. As early as possible encourage children to use scissors independently and encourage them to cut a variety of different things. Cut some circle shaped cucumber slices for them and allow them to use their clean scissors to cut the cucumber slices in half etc. Or encourage them to use their scissors to cut their playdough, straws, string, labels off their clothing, let them cut out their pictures themselves (even if they cut straight through the picture!). This is how they learn. |
