COMPOSER OF WEEK

Joseph Haydn,

String Quartet, Op. 76, No.1

At the age of eight,  Joseph Haydn went to a Choir school.

He also  served as chorister at St. Stephens's Cathedral in Vienna.

He played the organ, the violin and the harpsichord.

At the age of seventeen his voice changed.

He was dismissed from both the cathedral choir and the choir school.

After losing his job, Haydn became stronger.

His passion for music grew too. He wanted to be a composer.

In 1757, Haydn wrote his first two String Quartets.

Do you know what a String Quartet is?

String Quartet is a musical composition for:

Two violins, viola and a cello.
Haydn's String Quartet has 4 movements (or sections).

Each section should be played at different tempo:

I  Allegro con spirito (fast, quickly and bright)

II Adagio sostenuto (slow and stately)

III Minuetto, Allegro (fast, quickly and bright)

IV Allegro ma non troppo (fast, but not too fast)

What is tempo?

The tempo is the speed of the pulse  of a piece of music

Be creative and let your imagination fly!

Listen to Peter and the Wolf
