 SONG OF THE WEEK

I can see clearly now by Johnny Nash

https://www.singup.org/singupathome/song-of-the-week

Listen to the song and clap along in time to the beat,
feeling the rhythm and mood of the song.
Listen again and join in with the words,
Notice that the song slows down at the end.
Why not look up some British Sign Language
for key words in the song such as ‘rain’, ‘see’, and ‘sunshine’

Clever lyrics
Chat to someone about these questions:
Q. What do you think the song is about?
Q. Is it actually about the weather?
Q. What do the weather lyrics represent?

Listen to this amazing improvisation by Bobby Mc Ferrin  over   I can see clearly  now.

Bobby Mc Ferrin is a jazz vocalist. He is known for his vocal techniques, such as scat singing, polyphonic overtone singing, and improvisational vocal percussion.
Find out more about him!  He is amazing!

Lyrics

I can see clearly now the rain has gone.
I can see all obstacles in my way.
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind.

It’s gonna be a bright (bright), Bright sunshiny day.
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), Bright sunshiny day.

I think I can make it now the pain has gone. All of the bad feelings have disappeared. Here is the rainbow I’ve been praying for.
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), Bright sunshiny day.
Look all around,
There’s nothing but blue skies. Look straight ahead,
Nothing but blue skies.

Ah, ah,
Ah, ah, ooh.

I can see clearly now the rain has gone.
I can see all obstacles in my way.
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind.

It’s gonna be a bright (bright), Bright sunshiny day
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), Bright sunshiny day

It’s gonna be a bright (bright),
Bright sunshiny day
It’s gonna be a bright (bright),
Bright sunshiny day-ee-yay-ee-yeah.

Ooh.

Steve Reich - Six Pianos (At Home) and Clapping Music

Introduction to 20th Century Music

In the 20th century, a diverse range of new musical styles emerged that further challenged all the rules of earlier periods.
One of the new musical styles was called Minimalism.

What is Minimalism?

Minimalism is a form of art music or other compositional practice that employs limited or minimal musical materials and calls attention to the activity of listening.

Today we are going to listen to Six Pianos and Clapping Music  by Steve Reich.

Let's start with Six Pianos

This piece could be said to be the Marmite of contemporary music – in other words you’ll either love it or loathe it. It’s a pioneering piece of ‘minimalist’ music – relentlessly rhythmic and repetitive, and technically demanding on its performers. It begins with three pianists playing different notes to the same 8-beat pattern. Then two more pianists begin to
play the same pattern but shifted two beats out of phase. Different phase shifts of the same motifs fade in and out of the ever-changing musical texture for the duration of the piece. For some it’s hypnotic and fascinating; for others a form of torture!

As you could probably realised, these musicians were at home in lockdown! and managed to keep their passion for music going.
They have done this great recording being so far from each other!

What do you think about this music?
Do you like it?
How does the music makes you feel?
Imagine that you are the composer, as you listen to the piece, think for a moment, Is there anything that you like to change? Why?

Try to learn  the  rhythmical pattern  by joining in  at the beginning of the piece.

Listen to the piece carefully,  How many different rhythmical patterns can you hear?

SONG OF THE WEEK

PROTEST  SONG: SINGING FOR CHANGE

There are  events that are taking place in the USA, the UK and all across the world concerning the human rights of people of colour, protests and police violence.

Singing offers us a powerful yet peaceful way to bring our voices together in a common cause. Better still, by singing a protest song we communicate our message in a way that gets under the skin, offering an open invitation for anyone to join in at any time and any place.

This week we are going to learn songs about racial injustice.

Click on the link below to access all the songs.

Songs about racial injustice-Sing up

Get on board, lil' children
I wish I knew (how it would feel to be free)
Lean on me
Raise my voice
Something inside so strong

Picture
What are protest songs?

Protest songs have been sung around the world for centuries, calling for social change and shining a light on injustice.

Across history, protest songs have come in many shapes and sizes, from the spirituals calling for the abolition of slavery sung during America’s civil war, the solemnly adapted hymns sung by the Suffragettes of the early twentieth century, to the extraordinary anthems of America’s 1960s civil rights and anti-war movement.

Composer of  the Week

Maurice Ravel (1875–1937).

Listen to Bolero played at the BBC PROMS

Ravel’s famous orchestral work: Bolero, dates from 1928. Just before embarking on a tour of America, he was commissioned by the Russian ballerina and dance impresario Ida Rubinstein to compose the music for a ballet, provisionally called Fandango.

Ravel was absolutely insistent that the tempo of Bolero should remain constant throughout its 15 minutes, and the work is a feat of stamina for the snare drummer!

On the right, you will also find a performance of Bolero, this time with a  clear explanation of how the main melody or theme of the piece is passed around different instruments of the Orchestra.

We know that the snare drum is playing an  ostinatto  (rhythm pattern that is repeated through out the piece).

Watch the second youtube video/

I like you to listen carefully and  identify the instruments that are playing the main melody.

I will list here the different instruments that  Ravel's uses to pass around his melody!

Some of the names appears in the video   in French!

Flute
Clarinet
Basson
Oboe  (hautbois d' amour, in French)
Trumpet
Saxophone
English Horn
Celesta
Trombone

Composer of the  Week

Edward Elgar- born in England (1857-1934)

Edward Elgar's father was a musician who tuned pianos, owned a music shop and was employed as a church organist.

The young Edward learned to play the organ and violin at a young age, and composed his first short piece at the age of 10. His first job was as assistant organist to his father.
His main love was composition.

We are going to watch  an amazing performance of   Elgar's cello concerto 1st Movement.

Somebody once said that the way Edgar  chooses to open his Cello Concerto, is as if   Shakespeare had started Hamlet with ‘To be or not to be’... listen to the powerful beginning...

COMPOSER OF WEEK

Joseph Haydn,

String Quartet, Op. 76, No.1

At the age of eight,  Joseph Haydn went to a Choir school.

He also  served as chorister at St. Stephens's Cathedral in Vienna.

He played the organ, the violin and the harpsichord.

At the age of seventeen his voice changed.

He was dismissed from both the cathedral choir and the choir school.

After losing his job, Haydn became stronger.

His passion for music grew too. He wanted to be a composer.

In 1757, Haydn wrote his first two String Quartets.

Do you know what a String Quartet is?

String Quartet is a musical composition for:

Two violins, viola and a cello.
Haydn's String Quartet has 4 movements (or sections).

Each section should be played at different tempo:

I  Allegro con spirito (fast, quickly and bright)

II Adagio sostenuto (slow and stately)

III Minuetto, Allegro (fast, quickly and bright)

IV Allegro ma non troppo (fast, but not too fast)

What is tempo?

The tempo is the speed of the pulse  of a piece of music
