Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Positive Relationships
What is PSHE and Positive Relationships Education and why is it important?
We believe that effective teaching of our PSHE and Positive Relationships curriculum makes a significant contribution to pupils’ emotional health and wellbeing, giving them the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to become informed, active and responsible members of families and of social and economic communities.
Our programme of study includes the new statutory Primary Relationships and Health Education (RHE) curriculum alongside our existing PSHE curriculum, and embeds relevant elements of the statutory Science and Computing (Online Safety) National Curriculum. It also includes non-statutory economic wellbeing education.
The curriculum has been written with reference to the current statutory National Curriculum requirements; the relevant legislation; the LBTH Primary Schools Relationships and Health Education (RHE) mapping tool; DfE guidance for Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, 2020 and the PSHE Association’s primary programme builder.
The PSHE and Positive Relationships curriculum at Virginia Primary School reflects the school ethos and demonstrates and encourages the following values:
We will deliver the PSHE and Positive Relationships curriculum in a safe and secure learning environment, with staff that pupils know and trust. Staff will be supported in the delivery of the curriculum by specialists, such as the School Nurse and Local Authority Advisers from The Healthy Schools Team. This will ensure that staff are knowledgeable, competent and confident about teaching potentially sensitive content.

We aim for all children to:
- know and understand what is meant by a healthy lifestyle and how to look after their physical and mental health;
- be aware of how to keep themselves safe and how to make safe choices; develop the understanding and skills to manage their feelings and encourage themselves and others to make the right choices;
- understand what makes a good relationship with others, to demonstrate respect, empathy and care towards others;
- understand mental wellbeing, including being able to manage change, loss and bereavement;
- recognise risks in different situations; this includes recognising online pressures and what kind of physical contact is acceptable and unacceptable;
- be empowered with the appropriate vocabulary in order to communicate any concerns and to gain help;
- develop an understanding on matters of their growing bodies and personal
- hygiene;
- develop self -confidence and self-esteem and always strive to be the best they can be and to follow their dreams;
- develop a strong sense of self and mutual respect and equality, irrespective of culture, gender or sexual orientation;
- understand discrimination and prejudice in line with our single equality policy. This means discussing different family units and relationships including same sex relationships; discussing stereotyping and prejudice in the work place and the impact on ethnic minorities and communities;
- develop a deep understanding of children’s rights and demonstrate a commitment in being advocates for those rights;
- be thoughtful and responsible members of their community and their school, be proud to be part of the community and inspired to make a difference;
- become active members of a democratic society with a desire to make positive changes to our world;
In addition to the programme of study suggested by the PSHE Association, the school draws on other programmes such as Be the Best You Can Be to teach the qualities, skills, values, attributes we believe it is essential to develop in our children. This approach allows us to meet our responsibility under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states, “Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full.” (Article 29).
Virginia School is continuing along the journey of being a Rights Respecting School, we are mapping children’s rights onto our curriculum framework, as well as developing a deeper understanding of the values and qualities children need to develop in order to enjoy their rights and become active global citizens.
Finally, in order to develop the global perspective in our curriculum the school is part of the Global Learning Programme, which develops aspects of citizenship.
