It's Aoife here again today. Group 2 noticed that there were some spelling and grammar mistakes in yesterday's blog!!! Well done to Jubayra for correcting my spelling of 'carriage'! Did you notice any other mistakes??
As promised, here are the names of the civil rights activists. Did you get any correct?
Choose one of the activists above and use the website provided (or any other sources that you have at home) to write a biography of their life.
Salma tells me that you have written lots of biographies before so I think you will be excellent at this activity. I would LOVE to see some biographies posted on Purple Mash.
Here is a template with some reminders for what a biography should include. Have a good look at it befor you start planning and writing!
Here are some examples to help you structure your biography:
Before you watch the video, set a one minute timer. Write down as many adjectives as you can to describe 'Africa'
Chimamanda has brought our attention to the danger of stereotypes.
She has highlighted the fact that we have a stereotypical image of Africa.
Can you think of any other examples of stereotypes?
Where do you think stereotypes come from?
Why do you think stereotypes might cause problems?
Have you ever experienced being stereotyped? Have a go at completing the below activity.
Mine goes like this:
Just because I am a teacher,
I am not old or blind (yet!)
I am not organised.
I am not (very) strict.
I am calm and kind.
(Thanks to Group 2 for helping me to brainstorm my adjectives!)
