Konnichiwa Year 5!
How was everyone's 4 day weekend? I hope you all celebrated VE day and remembered all those important people that fought and gave their lives for us 75 years ago. It was nice that the weather was really good because I was able to celebrate by having a small barbecue after Niko went to sleep. Did you know that one of my Grandfathers performed with his band for Churchill during the war in Egypt and my other Grandfather and my wife's Grandfather joined the British army (from countries in the British Empire) and fought the Nazi's. I wonder if your families have any stories from the war? Ask your parents and grandparents and find out what your ancestors did during the war. Let me know what you got up to this weekend and any stories you found out on Purple Mash.
Our learning today
Lo: to discover ways to stop plastic pollution
Now that we understand how plastic ends up in the ocean. It all seems so unnecessary. Right? Why should our oceans and the world's sea creatures suffer because of human behaviour? Well, we have to find out how to stop it. There must be a way? Year 5, this is our mission as Eco-Warriors, to rid our beautiful oceans and protect all that amazing wildlife from this horrible human pollution...plastic!!
Well, you might have guessed, there are many ways! We just have to do them, stick with them and get everyone to join us. So today you are going to do your research. Check this link to Greenpeace and watch the two videos below...
I want you collect a list of ways we can reduce/stop plastic entering the ocean. You could make a mind map in your work book or design a poster on Purple Mash. All this will help us with our writing task. So get stuck in year 5, we want to end this horrible behaviour and save our seas!
Lo: to solve problems involving units of time
Let's start with some CLIC:
1284 ÷ 9
721 x 382
27,932,483 + 9,374,581
110,840,237 - 65,372,891
Today we will finish up with our time topic. We are going to look at time within timetables.
So what is a timetable?
What types of timetables do you know?
What information does a timetable show?
Here is my first example. Looking at this timetable we are going to work out how long it takes to get from Halifax bus station to Bradford interchange if you get the 06.35 bus?
First you need to find the 06.35 bus and then look down that column and find out what time the bus reaches Bradford. I can see that it reaches Bradford at 07.10.
So now i need to use my number line strategy to work out the journey time. Start your number with the earliest time and end it with the latest time.
Now jump along the number line in the least amount of jumps to get to the end.
Finally add up your jumps.
5 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 35
So it the bus journey from Halifax to Bradford takes 35 minutes.
Let's look back at the timetable again..
Could you get to Woodside if you jumped on the 07.43 bus at Halifax.
If we look at the 0.43 bus from Halifax and then look down that column, we can see an empty space for Woodside.
So no you cannot travel to Woodside on the 07.43 bus.
How long would it take you to reach Odsal if he caught the 06.15 bus at Shelf roundabout? If I check the timetable I can see that the 06.15 bus from Shelf roundabout gets to Odsal at 06.26. This one we can probably do in our brain but here is an example of a number line just in case..
5 + 6 = 11
So it takes 11 minutes to reach Odsal.
Using the timetable below, answer the questions. Use a number line if it helps. Challenge yourself to use the least amount of jumps. Use your brain if you are feeling confident.
Here is your challenge for the day.
Lo: Why do people visit places of worship?
Our topic for today is places of worship. I would like you answer the following questions from your own knowledge and some research.
What is a place of worship?
How many can you name?
What are the features?
What happens inside one?
Why do they exist?
Why do believers need them?
Use these links below to help you.
I am going to end this session with one more big question but this is one that can only come from you: If God is everywhere, why go to a place of worship? Be honest and think about it. We would have asked this question as a group and debated it so message me on purple mash what you feel. I have started an R.E blog post. Remember everybody is entitled to their opinion and belief but we are equally entitled to question and debate how we feel.
Finally I will leave you with my quote and person of the week. I have chosen this quote because I know it may feel like the crisis has knocked us down but the most important thing is how we react to it and get stronger because of it. I have chosen Eleanor Roosevelt this week because we just celebrated VE day which was the end of the last major world crisis. During that time of hardship and suffering, Eleanor Roosevelt fought for human rights and human compassion. We too are living through a huge crisis and we should also look to make positive changes to the world. Let me know what you think.
Have a great day! Theo :)
