Dzien Dobry Year 5!

So this is our last week before half-term holidays. I really can't believe how fast it has gone by. This week is a special one too; it is Mental Health Awareness Week. All across the country school children will be discussing mental health and this year's theme is kindness. I will be setting you kindness challenges each day. So as a first mental health week challenge for the week, I would like you to log into Purple Mash and share an act of kindness that you have witnessed during lockdown. Don't forget to check Emily's ELSA blogs, she will be posting mental health week ideas and challenges too.

Special mentions to Adeela and Ahmed for sharing parts of their explanation text. They are wonderful examples and show so much understanding of the fight against plastic. Well done!

Please check out the updated assemblies blog; we have a new one. Also please read Barbara's newsletter, she has updated us with some very important information about school.

Our Learning Today

Literacy:
Lo: To proof read

Ok, today year 5, I would like you to spend some time looking over your 3 sections. Hopefully you finished them all last week and checked over them many times but I want everyone to have one final chance to make sure it is the best it can be. If you haven't finished yet then this is your chance to catch up.

Please proof read all three sections and check for mistakes. Use a dictionary to check your spellings. Edit and up-level to improve your work. Be ambitious with your vocabulary. Remember your success criteria; make sure you have examples of all of them. Try to use a red pen for your edits but if you don't have one then just use any different colour. If you want to do a final draft then you can. Do all of this in your workbook.

Good luck year 5. I'm sure this will be one of your best pieces of writing this year so please take your time and make sure it is. You don't need to use Purple Mash for this because tomorrow I will set a 2do so we can publish it.

Maths:
Lo: to identify angles

Our new topic for this week is going to be angles. First of all what do you remember about angles?  I would like you to start with a brainstorm. In your books, put the word 'angles' in the middle of your page and I would like you to fill your page with every thing you can remember about angles. What are they? Can you name any? How do we measure them? Is there any important vocabulary you can remember?

Now I want us to explore some of these questions that you answered. What are angles?
Picture

If we look at this image of an angle. We can see two straight lines. These can be called arms, lines or rays. They meet at the vertex. As we learnt during our shape topic, this is the point/corner in our shape.  The space between the two lines is what we call the angle.

So what types of angles are there? Do you remember any? What this video to understand the types of angles there are and how we can identify them.

As the the angle gets bigger, the name changes. Here is what we have found out so far:

In your work books can you draw each of the angles we have identified. Label them with their name and any rules you must follow.
If you still need some extra support, follow this link for a break down of the rules again and some practice.

Geography:
Lo: to understand the impact of deforestation

Over this term we have become experts in the fight against plastic pollution in our oceans. Unfortunately, that is just one of the ways that humans are harming the Earth. One of those other ways is called deforestation. Let's unpick that word. Forestation would mean to make more forests. But the prefix 'de' means when we get rid of something. So deforestation means to get rid of forests.

Now this sounds like something we shouldn't be doing but why do humans do it and why is it such a bad thing? Follow this link and watch the video to find out what deforestation is.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/science-ks1-ks2-ivys-plant-workshop-the-impact-deforestation-has-on-plants/zd34hbk

Below are images of two methods used to destroy a forest.

Today I would like you to create a diamond 9. This is where you decide what are the most and least important of something. I want you decide what the biggest impact of deforestation is.

As always I leave you will my person and quote of the week. I chose the quote because I know that it may feel like this crisis will be impossible to overcome but in the end if we all try our best and work hard, we will find a way to beat it. There is nothing you cannot overcome year 5! I chose Albert Einstein as our person of the week to celebrate scientists like him that make amazing discoveries and continue to change the world for the better.
Have a great day. Theo :)
