Bonjour Year 5!

How did your research into plastic pollution go? I hope you found out lots of facts. Some of them are really scary. I know that the more we learn and research about this topic, the more angry, frustrated, sad but also passionate I feel. I feel Passionate because I want things to change so much. How are you feeling about plastic pollution? Let me know on Purple Mash..

Our learning today

Literacy:
Lo: to use causal connectives

Ok, so today I wanted us to do a bit of grammar as we haven't had a chance for a while now. We are going to be practising causal connectives. What are they, you might be thinking?
Picture
I want us to write some sentences using causal connectives with plastic pollution as our topic. Here are three examples..

By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than sea life; for this reason, people are campaigning to reduce the use of plastic.

If we reuse plastic bags when we shop then we will reduce the amount of plastic used; consequently, reducing the amount entering our oceans and harming sea life.

Charities such as WWF have a great website with information about plastic in the ocean; therefore, more people are becoming aware of the dangers ahead.

You can use this writing frame to help you come up with your sentences if you want the support or you can come with your own using the facts you found out yesterday.
Remember to:
  • Start with a fact
  • Use a semi-colon instead of a full stop
  • Choose an appropriate causal connective
  • Use a comma to separate the connective
  • Explain what effect your fact has

Maths:
Lo: to calculate the volume of a shape

Let's start off with some CLIC questions:
274,521,547 + 63,572,681
30,473,129- 12,748,739
863 x 472
3478 ÷ 18

Today we are going to do some volume based challenges and problems. Use the strategies you learnt this week and your CLIC knowledge to support you. Read the questions carefully and think about what it is asking you to do. Don't give up after one try if you find it tough, keep going and use a growth mindset.

R.E:
Lo: What do religions teach about death?

Last week we learnt about reincarnation. This is just one religious belief about death and afterlife. Today I would like you to research what other religions believe about death and afterlife. Download this powerpoint and have a look through the information.

Kali Mera Year 5!

I would like to thank all the children that have sent me some amazing pictures of the brilliant work you have been doing. Keep sending them in to me; I would really like to see something from everyone! I am challenging you to send me a picture of the piece of work you are most proud of this week or you just enjoyed doing the most. Ask your parents to email to it me at this address...
admin@virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk
I would also like to say I had some lovely catch ups yesterday on the phone. I am really enjoying our chats. I hope you are too. I will try speak to you all as regularly as I can but don't forget to message me on Purple Mash, I am always here to help.

Our learning today

Literacy:
Lo: to research facts about plastic pollution

This article has shown us just one example of how plastic pollution and plastic in the ocean has been affecting the Earth and its wildlife. These key facts are also included in the article:
Picture
Why is it important to include these facts in the article? What was the authors aim? How do these facts make you feel? Do they inspire you? What could we do to make things better?

Today I would like you to put your researchers hat on. Using the links below I would like you to research and find facts about plastic in the ocean. Make lots of bullet point notes. This is just the start of our research, we will be doing a lot over the next week.

https://www.sas.org.uk/our-work/plastic-pollution/plastic-pollution-facts-figures/
https://www.earthday.org/fact-sheet-plastics-in-the-ocean/
https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/9-facts-about-ocean-plastic/
https://plasticoceans.org/the-facts/

Maths:
Lo: to calculate the volume of a shape

Let's start off with some CLIC questions:
103,832,582 + 13,489,422
74,721,002- 69,634,211
582 x 375
9281 ÷ 48

Today I would like us to use our volume strategies and challenge ourselves to work from a different perspective..

How could we work this out?
Picture
Well we know that volume is L x W x H. In this image we have the   volume already and we have the height which 2m and the width which is 3m.

So we have to work backwards. Take the 24 and divide it by the height.
24 ÷ 2 = 12

Then we can divide the 12 by the width.
12 ÷ 3 = 4

So the missing length measurement is 4m.

Let's try this one...
Picture
So again we have to use the information that we know to work out the                 missing measurement and we have to work backwards.

We know the volume is 30 so let's take that and divide it by the width.
       30  ÷ 3 = 10

Then lets divide 10 by the length.
       10 ÷ 2 = 5

So the missing height measurement is 5cm.

Ok, have a go at these ones. Use your known facts and CLIC strategies to help with your division.

Picture

History:
Lo: to explain the importance of Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai is a famous environmentalist. She was an eco-warrior and fought for change in her country. I would like you to do some research about her.

Who was was she?
What was important about her?
What did she achieve?
What will she be remembered for?

Konnichiwa Year 5!

I have a few more announcements this morning. First all, Barbara has written a new newsletter. You can always find the newsletters on the school website homepage. Please read and let your parents know! Newsletters are a really important way for the school to give updates. Here is a link below.
https://www.virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk/newsletters.html

Please check out Emily's ELSA blog. She has been working hard posting loads of ideas to help you during lock down including timetables. You can also find this on the school website homepage. Check it out daily.
https://www.virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk/elsa-blog

Finally, the school has decided to set up a book swap. This means that each class will be able to come to school and pick up a new home reading book. Before we went into lock down, I let a lot of you take 2/3 books home. If you have finished them, bring them in and drop them off before you pick up a new one.
It will work with a timetable, Year 5 will be allowed to come to school and pick up a book on Fridays between 10am - 12pm. You can come anytime between those hours. Please do not come at any other time. It will be very quick. You will drop off your finished book and pick up a new book. You will receive a message from Joan with details also. But if you have any other questions please ask your parents to contact Barbara.

Our learning today

Literacy:
Lo: to analyse a section of an article

Today I would like you to read and unpick the final section of our article.

Picture
In your books can you answer these questions. Use evidence from the text when appropriate.

What does the final section tell us?
What are the key issues it addresses?
What have we learnt about plastic pollution?
How is the author trying to make us feel?

What questions do you have?

Maths:
Lo: to calculate the volume of a shape

Let's start off with some CLIC questions:
73,233,280 + 9,274,921
191,283,472- 99,292,102
633 x 287
7162 ÷ 37

Let's have a look at a shape without measurements..
Picture
This shape is 4 cubes long. So 4cm length.
It is has a 1 cube width. So 1cm width.
And it has a 2 cube height. So 2cm height.

So using our formula - L x W x H.
Let's start by multiply the length and width.
4 x 1 = 4

Now let's multiply that answer by the height.
4 x 2 = 8

So the volume of this shape is 8 cm³

Have a go at these...
Picture

Louise suggests, if you want a little more practice, check this link out.

Science:
Lo: to describe the life process of reproduction in animals

Yesterday we discovered the life cycles of different species. The first stage in all living things life cycle is birth. In order for them to live they have to be born. And before they are born some amazing things have to happen.

Today I would like you to log into Espresso and have a read through these three stages of the process. Reproduction, fertilisation and birth. Please take notes about what you discover under those three sub headings. Espresso gives you clear definitions for all the new vocabulary. Write any new words in your Vocab book. As always, ask me any questions on Purple Mash. I am here to help.

Ciao Year 5!

I hope you all had a restful, fun and sunny weekend. I am looking forward to our catch ups again this week. So look out for my call. I wasn't able to chat to you all as I couldn't get through but try to let you parents know to look out for a withheld call.

I also wanted to announced that Barbara and Amanda have been busy working on an assemblies blog. It is now available and they will be updating it weekly. Find it under the home learning tab at the top of the school website but here is the link...
https://www.virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk/assemblies-blog

Also, Mercedes has been busy creating a music blog. It has loads of activities for you to work your way through. Please check it out, it is also under the home learning tab at the top of the school website but here is the link..
https://www.virginia.towerhamlets.sch.uk/music-blog

Our learning today

Literacy:
Lo: to analyse a section of an article

Today I would like you to continue reading and analysing the article.  Read and unpick.

Picture
In your books can you answer these questions. Use evidence from the text when appropriate.

What is this section telling us?
What new information have we been given?

What are the key issues it addresses?
What have we learnt about the whale?

What questions do you have?

Maths:
Lo: to calculate the volume of a shape

Let's start off with some CLIC questions:
12,347,843 + 9,262,038
59,361,048 - 43,374,190
467 x 483
5910 Ã· 29

Now for our new topic this week. We are going to be learning about volume. So what is volume?
Picture
How is it calculated?
Picture
Here is my example..
Picture

So first of all we need to look at the measurements of the   shape:
 Length = 12 cm
 Width = 4 cm
 Height = 7 cm.

Let's take the length and width and multiply them
12 x 4 = 48

Now let's multiply that answer by the height.
48 x 7 = 336

So the volume of this shape is 336 cm³

You can use your CLIC strategies to do the multiplications. Smile strategy would work well with this question.

Hope that all makes sense. The volume of a shape is the space inside a 3d shape. Find the length, width and height. Then multiply the length and width. Then multiply the answer by the height. You will have the volume of the shape.

Have a go at these..
Picture

Science:
Lo: to explain different life cycles

Every living thing has a life cycle. This means that they are born, grow, get older, they have children and eventually die. Today I would like you to research the difference between the life cycles of a mammal, amphibian, insect, bird and plant. I would like you to draw the cycle with labels in your book.
This may take you a couple days. Take your time. Please send me pictures of your drawings and labels.

Here are some helpful links or you can watch these short clips..

Aloha Year 5!

What did you find out about reincarnation? Let me know on Purple Mash. You could even create a poster with a blank poster app using those key words.

Just to keep reminding you all, I will be trying to call you all once a week to catch up. I have tried to call everyone but it can be hard to get through. So let your parents know to look out for my call and please pick up. Try to have a think about what you might ask me or what you want to talk about. Again, it was lovely chatting to everyone on the phone yesterday. A special thank you to Yahya. We had such a great chat. He loads to say and ask, it was brilliant! I hope I get to speak to you all like that soon.

Our learning today

Literacy:
Lo: to analyse a paragraph

Today I would like you to read the first section of our article..
Picture
In your books can you answer these questions. Use evidence from the text when appropriate.

What is the article telling us?
What are the key issues it addresses?
What questions do you have?

Maths:

Circle Time:

I would like you to gather your family together this afternoon for a family circle time. Explain to them how circle time works. Explain how it is different from P4C. I would like you to start it off with a game. Try to use one we have done in class. Then I would like you to explore how every one is feeling at the moment. Use 'I feel' as a sentence starter. Then I want you to come up with a list of the best and worst things about the lockdown/isolation. At the end of the circle time I want you to ask 'what does each person appreciate the most in the world'. Has that changed since lockdown? Let me know your thoughts and findings on Purple Mash!!

Ok guys, that is everything I have for you this week. I hope you have enjoyed our first week of summer term and getting stuck into our new topic. We have lots more learning to come. Enjoy the sunshine, exercise, draw, play, cook, spend time with your family, read and do things that get you off the computer screen!! Have a great Friday and an amazing weekend Year 5! Check back on Monday! Theo :)

Thursday - Home Learning

23/4/2020

As-Salam Alaykum Year 5!

What did you find out on the CIA Factbook? They have so much information on every country in the world. It's fascinating the things you can find out. Leo was shocked at how big Egypt was compared to Norway! Apparently it is nearly 3 times bigger! Wow. What was your most interesting fact? Let me know on Purple Mash.

Also it was really great to get a chance to have a catch up over the phone with lots of you yesterday and a really big thank you from me to the parents that said such lovely things about the blog. It really made my day! If Louise or I haven't spoken to you yet then try to tell your parents to look out for a call. It would be wonderful to speak to you all.

Our learning today

Literacy:
Lo: to analyse a headline

Today I would like you look at the headline of our article.
Picture
Think about the images we have seen so far of the whale on the beach. I know it is clearly a sad story (like others we have read this year), but remember that we cannot hide from real life events like this. It is important to know them, understand them and hopefully grow up to change them for the better. So today I want you to analyse the information from this headline.

What does this headline tell us?
What new information have we been given?
What has happened?
How do you think it has happened?
What questions do you have?

Use your work book to do this.

Maths:
Lo: to calculate the area of compound shapes

Let's start with some CLIC:
6291 ÷ 35
652 x 284
73,583,480 + 67,372,945
87,515,292 - 82,587,548

Today we are going to continue learning about area.
Picture

We can see that the length of the shape is 20cm and the width is 6cm.

So we multiply them. 6 x 20 = 120

The area of this rectangle is 120cm²

Picture

The smaller rectangle has a length of 5cm and a width of 3cm.

5 x 3 = 15
So the area of the smaller rectangle is 15cm²

120 + 15 = 135
So the total area of the two shapes is 135cm²

Picture

No it does not change the area because area is the measurement of the surface of the shape. Or when we look at it like this, the inside of it.

The two shapes are still the same size when we put them together. So the area of this compound shape is still 135cm²

Have a go at finding the area of these shapes. First find the area of the individual shapes and then add them together to find the area of the compound shape. I would like you do to at least three and remember to look at them first and choose your level of challenge (some are more challenging than others). Have a growth mindset and give it a go. I know you can do it year 5..

Kali Mera Year 5!

How did you get a long with our tasks yesterday? I hope finding a perimeter makes sense now? Which UN global goal did you research? Don't forget to message me on Purple Mash with any questions you have and send pictures of work to the school email. Also a reminder that If I don't ask you to use Purple Mash for your work then I would like you to do it in your work book. I think it is important we keep using our handwriting and limit our screen time as much as possible. So use that work book just like you would at school (date, LO, neat handwriting, presentation).

Our learning today

Literacy:
Lo: to write a witness statement

Today I want you to imagine you have been walking along this beach. What do you see and how do you feel?
Picture

Now in the distance you come across this...
Picture
Finally, what do you do to help..
Picture
I would like you to write a statement about your experience. Where were you? What did you see? What did you do? How did you try to help? What will you do in the future to help animals like these?

Maths:
Lo: to calculate the area of rectangles and squares

Today we are going to be learning about area. So what is area?
Picture
How do we work it out?
Picture
Can you work out the area of this shape?
First of all we don't need all these measurements.
To find the area, we only need to use the length and the width. When we know them, all we have to do is multiply them.
The length of this shape is 12cm and the width of this shape 9cm,
12 x 9 = 108

So the area of this shape is 108cm²
Picture

Let's have a go at this one...
Picture

The length of this shape is 14cm and the            width is 3cm.

Remember the formula to find area is length x   width. So we have to multiply 14 and 3.
 14 x 3 = 42

So the area of this shape is 42 cm²

Have a go at these. Find the area of at least three of these shapes. You choose your level of challenge. CLIC strategies will help with your multiplications, especially smile.

Lo: to calculate perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes

Recap: we learnt that the perimeter of a shape is the total length around a shape. A composite rectilinear shape is made up of more than one shape with straight lines.

Today I would like us to continue to practice this skill. Can you find the perimeter of this shape.

Picture
Look at the question below. Think about what measurements could make a perimeter of 42cm. There any many answers. Can you think of at least two different ways to make this shape have a perimeter of 42cm.
Picture

Today I would like you do create a variety of your own composite rectilinear shapes but with these specific perimeters. Remember that the perimeter is the total length of all the sides of the shape.

What do you know about the UN global goals? Why were they created?

I would like you check this link out and explore the 17 goals that the UN and world leaders set out to change the world for the better. Read through them and have a think about what they mean and what they are for.
https://www.globalgoals.org/

For today's task, I would like you to choose at least one of the goals and summarise what it is. Give examples and use the information on the website.

Have a great day. Theo :)

Monday - Home Learning

20/4/2020

Good Morning Year 5!

Welcome back to our virtual classroom. I have missed you all loads. I hope you liked the staff video messages. If you have any of your own send them to me with the school email address. I really hope you enjoyed your Easter break and you are ready to get stuck into our new term. I have lot's of great learning planned! Don't forget that you can keep accessing any of the online sessions we enjoyed over the holiday and give yourself breaks in your school day for exercise, drawing, dancing, cooking and reading etc. All those sessions are good for mind and body. It is important to remember that we are back at school now so your school days should be spent doing appropriate things.

This half term our new topic is Eco-Warriors! This topic is all about the environment, climate change and how humans are changing the Earth with their behaviour. It is a very exciting topic and hopefully will set you all on a path to changing the world for the better.

Our learning today

Literacy:
Lo: to identify meanings of key words

This half term we will be studying an article written about some of the issues caused by human behaviour. As usual our first literacy session of a half term will be looking into new language. Here is a list of new words/phrases that will appear in this article:

Consume, fragments, entangled, stranded, non-biodegradable, debris, degrade, emaciated, severe, volume, quantities, shallow, discover, globally, ingest, increase, blubber, malnourished, zoologist, emerging economies.

Can you use a dictionary (if you have one) or an online dictionary to look up the meanings of these words. Please write them up in your work book.

Maths:
Lo: to calculate perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes

Let's start with some CLIC:
2739 ÷ 13
253 x 662
43,335,615 + 25,571,901
67,573,591 - 62,983,793

This week our new topic for maths is area and perimeter. Today we are going to start off with perimeter. So what is perimeter and how do we find the perimeter of a shape?
Picture
So to find the perimeter of a shape, you must add up the measurements of all the sides of the shape. This total will give you the perimeter of the shape.

Have a look at this simple example...

Picture

To find the perimeter of this shape, you have to add 12cm+12cm+9cm+9cm.

12+12+9+9= 42.

So the perimeter of this shape is 42cm.

Some shapes are made up of more than one shape. How might we work out the perimeter of a shape like this?
Picture
First of all we need to find the length of the missing pieces. Let's start with 'a'.

Can you see that the length of the longest line is 10cm? Now look directly below and you can see at the bottom there is 6cm in length.

So to find 'a', we need to subtract 10cm and 6cm to see what is left over.

10 - 6 = 4.    So 'a' must be 4cm.

To find 'b'. We have to look at the longest width. This is 6cm.

If we look across we can see 4cm. So we have to subtract 6cm and 4cm.

6 - 4 = 2.   So 'b' must be 2cm.

Now we just need to add all our measurements up. 4 + 10 + 6 + 6 + 2 + 4 = 32

So the perimeter of this composite rectilinear shape is 32 cm.

Today I would like you to work out the perimeter of at least three of these composite rectilinear shapes. Please use a growth mindset and try your best. Some of these are very challenging so please start with shapes that you feel most comfortable with and build your level of challenge up. You may wish to start with the shapes that have no missing pieces. This will help you get confident with finding the perimeter.

Here are your challenges for today. You do not need to do them all.

Topic:
Lo: to think about the threats to our world

Watch this video and have a think about how it makes you feel.
I would like you make a brain storm for our new topic 'Eco-Warriors'.
What is an eco-warrior?
What does it mean?
What do you know?
What do you want to know?
What are the current threats to our world?
What can we do to help?
What questions do you have?

You can do this as a brainstorm in your work book or use the 2connect app on your 2do list on Purple Mash.

I leave you with my Quote and Person of the Week. I chose this quote because none of us are in our comfort zones at the moment but it is important to remember that so many great things could come from this crisis if we fight for them. I chose Florence Nightingale because she chose to leave her country and look after sick people during a huge dangerous crisis and for me she represents all those health care workers risking their lives to support us at this time. Let me know what you think on Purple Mash.

Have a great day guys. Theo :)

Here is Konnie's really cool water experiments..

Ok guys, so that is the end of our two week Easter holiday at home! I can't believe it went so fast!! Don't forget all the things that you learnt and enjoyed during our holiday. Everything I have posted over the last two weeks can be accessed anytime online. Your favourite sessions will still be airing live. Whether you want to listen to a story from David Walliams, dance with Oti Mabuse, learn with Konnie Huq or experiment with Maddie Moate, they will all still be available even when we start school learning again. Break up your day with your favourite session and keep your minds and bodies active.

On Monday we will start virtual school again. Our new topic will be 'Eco Warriors' and we will be thinking and learning about the affects humans are having on the planet and what we could do to reverse these changes in the future! I look forward to starting school again and never forget that you can contact me at anytime on Purple Mash. Please spread the word to our classmates. Hope everyone joins us on Monday for our new learning!

Have a lovely weekend. By the way it's Greek Easter this weekend, so I will finally be ending my fast!! Wooop! Kristos Anesti! Kali Pascha! (Happy Easter in Greek) Theo :)
