![]() A message from Emily... :) Hi Year 5!!! I hope that you are all well and making the most of your home-learning opportunities! Theo has been creating such fabulous resources and activities for you to complete. You guys are so fantastic at learning!! I have been busy on my ELSA blog (which you can find on the school website). It really is so important that we look after our mental well-being during this time. I try to post different activities associated with looking after our mental health. My aim is to create a virtual ‘The Space’ on Purple Mash where we can communicate whenever you may need to talk about a worry or if you want just have a chat /take part in an activity to brighten your day :) I am logging into Purple Mash each day to check on what you are all doing (the learning is AMAZING) and I am replying to any messages that I receive - PLEASE do message me! I love to hear from you! It really makes my day to know what you’re up too and how you are enjoying the learning. Remember though, little and often home learning is better than cramming it all into one day! You should also take the time in your day to look after your physical and mental health. DO things that you makes you feel HAPPY! Please don't spend too much time on technology! ( I can sense the eye roll at this statement haha) Whether you...read your favourite book, bake a yummy cake, listen to some music, dance around your living room, see how many kick ups you can do in 30 seconds, doodle on paper, build a fort from pillows and blankets or relax to your favourite movie... Do something that makes you feel happy!! I know at the moment it can feel a little bit daunting for some of you. Not knowing when we may return to school or when you will get to see relatives and friends is scary for a young person to understand but just imagine the immense feeling you will feel when you are finally reunited with the people that you love. You will learn so much from this experience. You will learn how to be grateful for what you have and that material things really don’t mean nothing at all. Just before I go... Think of this experience as like being stuck in traffic in a tunnel. You know and you can see the light at the end which is the way out. You don’t know how long you may be stuck in this tunnel. You may begin to get bored, you may try find things to do to keep you entertained in this dark tunnel. You may get annoyed, increasingly frustrated... BUT what keeps you calm is that you know that there IS a way out and you’ll get there soon. Keep moving towards the light at the end. We will all be out of this tunnel soon. Keep positive - keep smiling - keep being YOU! Missing you all more everyday! Take care & wash ya hands! Emily Ni Hao Year 5! I hope you enjoyed yesterdays activities. What was the most fascinating fact you discovered about DNA? Did you know we share 50% of our DNA with bananas and that we share 99.1% of our DNA with chimpanzees. How amazing is that? Post your thoughts, ideas and questions to our Purple Mash blog and join the year 5 virtual circle time blog post too. Don't forget that Emily is always here for you too, ELSA is all set up on Purple Mash. Join her for some really fun questioning or just to have a chat. Challenges for today: Reading: Check out serial mash for books to read online. When you have read a chapter, please make sure you answer the questions about that chapter, there are a variety of tasks you could do. Literacy: Continue your Dick Turpin web page. If you finish: proof read, edit, up level and self critique it. I know that some of you have been using video apps to communicate with you friends and share your work. Give each other partner critiques to help each other improve and explain what you really like. Check yesterdays post for my example for your writing. Maths: Have a go at these using our CLIC strategies: 7352 ÷ 46 152 x 924 12,374,682 + 9,723,521 83,741,002 - 51,328,822 Here are today's challenges: Our focus is units of weight. ![]()
Geography: Choose a continent. I want you to look for human and natural physical features. Can you find:
Use these links to help: https://www.google.co.uk/intl/en_uk/earth/ https://mapmaker.nationalgeographic.org/ https://www.factmonster.com/atlas Enjoy your day. Theo :) Buongiorno Year 5! I hope you all had a good rest this weekend and are ready for our last week before the Easter holidays! What did you get up to this weekend? How have you adapted to life in isolation? Has anything really interesting or funny happened? What has been your favourite activity so far? Please let me know on our Purple Mash blog, I have made a circle time post for our thoughts and feelings. I would love to hear from you all! This weekend, I was busy getting everything planned for you guys and reading through what you have handed in to me. I am really impressed with all your hard work. Don't forget you can also take pictures of the work you are doing at home and attach them to posts on our purple mash blog so that I can see it all. I am really proud of all the amazing work you are doing, you are all showing a wonderful growth mind-set in difficult times and I would like to thank you all for continuing to try your best. Well Done! Challenges for today: Reading: Review a book you have read this week. You can use the 'blank book review' app on your Purple Mash 2do list. Literacy: Today we are going to start creating a web page all about the life of Dick Turpin, using your research from Friday. Check out the 'blank web page' app on your Purple Mash 2do list. I would like you to write a short biography about his life using the information you found out. A biography describes someones life and is written in chronological order. You start by describing his birth and early life. Then his adult life and his crimes. Finally his capture, death and how he will be remembered. This should take you a couple of days. So don't rush your writing. You will need a title for you biography in the heading box. In the menu box you could include key facts about his life: name, alias, birth, death, occupation, marriage etc. The main body text is were you write your biography about him. Don't forget to attach a picture. The widgets box is free for you to be creative. Please save your work so that I can see it. Check out my example below for some inspiration for your writing.. ![]()
Maths: Have a go at these using our CLIC strategies: 6326 ÷ 39 723 x 256 82,373,854 + 21,363,513 52,405,823 - 31,850,722 This week we will be challenging our understanding of units of measure by solving a variety of word and number problems. Today our focus is units of length. Have a go at these: ![]()
Science: I would like you to research DNA. What is it? What does it stand for? What is it made from? What does it do? Why is it so important?
These websites will be helpful and use Kiddle to find some of your own: https://www.ducksters.com/science/biology/dna.php https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpffr82/articles/zvwbcj6 https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/DNA/390730 What is the most fascinating fact you found out? Post it to our Purple Mash blog.. Hope you have a great day guys. I am going to leave you with our person and quote of the week. Have a think about the quote and let me know what it tells us. Why do you think Mother Theresa is such an important person and why her actions give as inspiration at this current time. Check back tomorrow. Have a wonderful day. Theo :) If anyone is interested (this looks very cool) and your parents have a Facebook account. Chester Zoo are live streaming their animals all day.. Enjoy
Konichiwa Year 5!
Hope you are proud of your written pieces! If you aren't finished yet, take your time, there is no rush. Have a go over the weekend and if you get a chance, try to type it up on purple mash. Use the blank chapter book app. Or you could take a picture of your finished writing and start a new blog post on purple mash and just upload the image so I can see it! I can't wait to read them! Challenges for today: Literacy: As we discussed a few weeks ago, highwaymen were criminals that travelled along the highways during the 1600s to 1800s. It was very easy for them to rob and steal because pistols had recently been invented, which helped them to threaten people and there was no police force to stop them. There were many infamous highwaymen. Infamous means being famous for not being very nice. The poem we have been learning about is based on a real life highwayman called Dick Turpin. Today I would like you to research and find out all about him and his life... Use this link and find answers to the questions below: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Turpin What was his full name? When was he born? Where was he born? When did he die? How did he die? Did he have any alias? What was his occupation? Was he married? Was he part of a gang? What were his crimes? Was he ever caught? Are there any other important stories or facts that you can find out? Maths: This week we have been learning all about measure. So today, I would like you to find a variety of things in your house that you could measure using the different units of measure that we learnt about. Try to find at least 5 things for mass, length and capacity. As a challenge you could also convert all your measurements to imperial units. Try to estimate first and then measure. Finally, can you log into Purple Mash and check your 2do list, have a go at the measure activities. PSHE: I hope everyone had a good clap out of their windows, gardens and doors yesterday to thank all the amazing people helping and supporting us through this difficult time. So today I would like you log into Purple Mash and check your 2do list. Use 'blank template' to design a poster to encourage healthy and able people to volunteer for the nhs or in their communities to help vulnerable people. The more we support each other the quicker we will overcome this and get back to our normal lives. Hope you have enjoyed your first week in isolation. I have really missed you all and missed being together in our classroom. But I am so very pleased that so many of you have joined the blog and asked amazing questions, that you are all working really hard and being positive role models to your friends and families. Also please don't forget to keep spreading the word about the website and the blog to our classmates. Have a great weekend. I will post again on Monday so check back then. Theo :) As-Salaam Alaykom Year 5! I bet your stories are all really exciting! I would love to read them! If any of you would like to type them up on Purple Mash so I can read them, go for it! You could use the 'blank chapter book' app. How did you get on with your games? Hope everyone in your house had a go. Remember to check out the other resources on the school's home page under 'Learning at Home'. There are loads of links for you to follow and keep yourselves busy. And check your 2do list on Purple Mash regularly, I update it with new activities all the time! Challenges for today: Literacy: Continue with your writing from Tim's perspective. Keep drafting and editing until you are happy and then write it out in neat (on paper or Purple Mash). Extra Challenge: You don't all have to do this. But if you have time, try to write the story again from an opposite perspective. Someone that liked the highwayman and experienced the story in a very different way. For example the Landlord. You could describe his fear of the red coats, how he loved his daughter but couldn't save her, he was happy that she loved the highwayman and his sadness when he lost them both? Try and be creative, have a growth mindset and do your best! Maths: In the past we used to measure things differently. We hadn’t invented the very simple metric system (which we have been learning about this week). People used something called the imperial system. In the UK, we use both and it is important that we learn about the differences. Have a read of these conversions https://www.theschoolrun.com/what-are-imperial-units Watch this video https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4nsgk7/articles/zwbndxs Have a go at some of these challenges: ![]()
R.E: Easter is one of the most important celebrations in the Christian calendar and it is nearly upon us. Log into Purple Mash and check your 2do list. Can you have a go at the 2do Easter story task.
Enjoy your day. Theo :) Bonjour Year 5! How did your facial composites look? Did you practice your units of mass? Don't forget to read for at least 20 minutes everyday and write any words up in your vocab book for our challenge. Look up definitions online. I can't wait to see them! Check out Serial Mash on Purple Mash for books to read online. Make sure you try to answer the questions after you read the text. Also follow this link to Amazon Audible: https://stories.audible.com/start-listen There is huge library of books that you can listen to while you are doing your school work! How awesome is that!? Lastly, we all have to find ways to keep fit and healthy while we are in isolation, check this out: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ Everyday Joe Wicks will run a P.E session online, all you have to do is watch and follow his moves. What a great way to exercise at home! Challenges for today: Literacy: Using the plan you made yesterday, I would like you re-tell the story of the Highwayman as if you are Tim. Can you write two paragraphs from Tim's perspective. Remember to use first person as you are Tim, lots of show not tell and challenge yourself to use relative clauses. Paragraph one: What did he see? How did he feel? What did he do? Paragraph two: What happened to Bess and HWM? What did he see? How did he feel in the end? ![]()
Here is my example. Use it for inspiration. Try to be creative. This might take you a couple of days. Try to proof read, self critique, edit and up-level. Write as many drafts as you want to improve it.
Maths: Check this out - http://teach.files.bbci.co.uk//skillswise/ma23capa-e3-f-what-is-capacity.pdf Log into study ladder and have a go at the 'Units of capacity' activities. ICT - Can you use purple mash to create a new 2diy 3d game. Play it with your family. Enjoy your day. Theo :) Buenos Dias Year 5! Hope you found all the challenges interesting yesterday. The highwayman died!! Can you believe it?! Well, I know most of you predicted it so probably wasn't too much of a shock. He was very upset when he realised that Bess was dead and went charging in. Unfortunately, the Red coats were ready for him. The last two stanzas show us that Bess and HWM became ghosts continuing their routine forever, they must really have loved each other a lot! I guess we know why in the pictures they looked like ghosts... Here are today's activities... Challenges for today: Literacy: Can you create a plan for retelling the story from Tim the Ostlers perspective. Imagine you are Tim! How did it all begin? What did he see and hear? How did he feel about Bess? How did it make him feel? What did he do to stop the highwayman? How did he feel when they both died? Brainstorm Tim's feelings and then answer the questions in the plan. You could print my plan if you can or use the questions as sub headings (like we do in class) and write it out in your work book. You'll have to write this in first person, remember you are Tim. ![]()

Maths: Check this page out on BBC bitesize - Today we are learning about measuring mass.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z9sfr82/articles/zqf4cwx Log into study ladder and have a go at the 'Units of mass' activities. Art: When a crime is committed but the suspect has got away, witnesses give statements to the police about what they saw. A police sketch artist listens to the description and draws a face. These are called facial composites. The police use these pictures to try to solve crimes. Watch this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X4Lubyqb2M Ask someone in your house to describe someones face. Draw what you imagine when they describe it. Finally, if you log into Purple Mash, you should notice a 2do list. I will be adding tasks I think will be useful as extra challenges or just for some extra fun. I have set a 'blank diary' as a 2do. I think it would really interesting to write a short diary entry about your day, every day. Your diary might one day be as famous as Samuel Pepys or Anne Frank! When you write a page, don't forget to save it and then when you open it each day, you can add a new page by clicking the green add symbol at the top of the page. Please Please Please let everyone in class know about our blog so they can access our learning. Enjoy. Check back tomorrow. Theo :) Dzien Dobry Year 5!
Welcome to Day 1 of our Home learning! I hope you have all had a good weekend and you are ready to start learning from home. Try your best to set up a quiet space which is just yours, this will help you concentrate on your work. Make sure you have your books, stationery, electronic device, work book and anything else you need in your space. Please take regular breaks from the screen and do lots of exercise. Share and spread the word about our blog with everyone in the class, especially the children that missed the last week. Challenges for today: Literacy - Finish reading the Highwayman https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43187/the-highwayman How does it end? What happened to the highwayman? Why are the last two stanzas repeating the start? Were your predictions correct? I will answer these questions tomorrow but have a think about them today! Remember if you don't understand a word, ask an adult, check a dictionary or check online. Today I would like you to choose your favourite 5 stanzas in the whole poem and illustrate them with annotations from the text. Maths - This week we are learning about units of measure. Can you log into your Study Ladder account and have a go at the activities for 'Units of length'. Don't forget to watch the video first. Science-Watch https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/introduction-to-forensic-science/0/steps/10547 and record your finger prints. It is very important to forensic scientists to identify finger prints at crime scenes. Can you do a search online and find out how many types of finger prints there are? Do a drawing for each type. I will continue to post an inspirational person and quote every Monday. I think we need them now more than ever. I chose this quote because I think it makes a lot of sense right now. Always be optimists Year 5, we will get through this together stronger than ever!! Make sure you share this with your family! I have chosen Michael Faraday as our person of the week because of his hard work and determination to invent electricity we could all use, we are able to communicate and continue our learning. Thank you Michael Faraday! Thanks Year 5. Check back tomorrow. Enjoy your the tasks and your day. Theo :) Namaste Year 5!
