20/4/2020

Welcome back!

I hope you were able to enjoy the Easter break even if you weren’t able to do all of the things you might have liked to do.

It has been great to hear from some of you on Purple Mash and I look forward to hearing from more of you as we start with our home learning again.

This term our topic is Technology Wizards.

We will be basing our English work on technology and using different technology to inspire our writing. In our Topic learning we will be thinking about sound and electricity and how these work as well as learning about different scientists and inventors who have influenced our lives.

English - Writing

This week, we will be basing our writing around this short film, it is less than 5 minutes long.

https://www.literacyshed.com/girlandrobot.html#

Today’s task is to write a list of questions about the film.
REMEMBER: Questions often start with the words who, what, where, when and how.
For example, what is the robot for?

You can either do this in your home learning book or on the Purple Mash blog I have set up for English this week.

English - Reading

I know lots of you have started to run out of things to read at home.

This is a link to a new story we will be reading together, it’s all about a dragon. I chose it because this week it’s St George’s Day and St George is famous for killing a dragon.

Today I would like you to read Chapter 1 and answer the questions below.

Chapter 1 Questions
  1. Why did Guster itch?
  2. How would you describe Guster?
  3. What does the author mean when they say that ‘Redbreath was prone to dramatics’?
  4. Why was Redbreath wary of humans?
  5. In your own words, describe the setting of the story.

Maths

Over the next few weeks we are going to be learning about shapes.

Today’s task is based around right angles.

Right angles are the same as a quarter turn. They can be found in lots of things around the house like the corner of a book or on most furniture. The picture below shows you right angles in different shapes. Can you see any right angles from where you are sat at the moment?

Look at this picture. How many right angles can you find in it?

Hint: Right angles aren't just found in squares and rectangles, they can be in triangles too.

CHALLENGE: Can you draw your own picture of something and try to include as many right angles as possible? Send in your pictures and we can try and count the right angles.

Science

Create a sound map.

Sit somewhere in your house and shut your eyes for 10 minutes.

Focus on the different sounds you can hear.
What are they?
Where are they coming from?
Are they loud or quiet?
Do the sounds last for a long time or do they stop quickly?

When you open your eyes, draw a map showing where the different sounds were coming from and trying to describe them.

Here is a sound map I started to give you an idea. I'm sure you'll be able to hear more things over 10 minutes as well as add in more detail about them!

Don't forget...

  • Log into Purple Mash and say hello to us on the blog. We really do love seeing your comments and finding out what you are up to.
  • Send in photos of all the extra curricular things you got up to at home over the Easter break.
  • You should still be making sure you wash your hands regularly.

Hasta luego,

Ruth and Emily
