Ola Year 2, hope you had a good sleep. How did you get on with Monday’s home learning? I hope you managed to write that letter for me. I received Thanzil and Zak’s letter. It was really helpful and funny. Thanzil suggested that I put ice on the floor, so it can sleep without being too hot. Good idea Thanzil! Zak, you had some doubts about the surprise visitor didn’t you? Also, I won’t be taking my bed, backyard with me when I make the journey to South Pole.. haha :-)

Did you perform the poem ‘In Praise of Penguins’ for your family? I like the poem because it is funny and has lots of facts and some topic words. Today I want you to answer the questions in your homework book. Some are really tricky but you have to read them carefully to understand what the question is asking you. So good luck!

  1. Who does the poet call ‘funny birds’?
  2. Find the noun phrases in the first sentence. Can you think of another noun phrase the poet could have used?
  3. Find a verb in the second sentence. Can you do the action for the verb?
  4. Give one reason why the penguins might move really fast?
  5. What does the word ‘bray’ mean? What other animals make this noise?
  6. Can you find an example of a simile?
  7. Find one thing the penguins can’t do?
  8. How does the feather and the blubber help the penguins?
  9. Why does the wing make a perfect paddle?
  10. What do they use for steering? Can you think of vehicles that have a steering wheel?
  11. Why do you think the poet is saying that the penguins are NEAT? Find all the evidence.

Maths

I am so impressed with some of your learning on studyladder. Also those of you that are using studyladder everyday please take breaks in between because we don’t want you to spend too long staring at the screen. I am giving you few challenges for today. You can ask your adults to sit with you to go through them. Some you will be able to do it independently and some you may need some support. If you find these challenges too tricky then go on studyladder and carry on with the challenges you are doing.

Meet Sarah Fosse. She is an Artist, who lives in London. She uses bright colours and unique style to paint landmarks  in London. Have a look at her paintings with transport vehicles. What do you notice? Look at the lines she uses. What is odd about them? What technique do you think she uses? Have a go at sketching any of her painting. You don’t need to do an actual painting but you can use a pencil to try to replicate her work. I know that you will get it wrong and it may look really messy but have a go again and remember we need to have a growth mindset when we do something. :-)

Good morning Year 2...
Something astonishing happened to me yesterday! While I was doing my daily exercise in the morning, I heard a knock on my door. So, I dashed towards the front door and pushed the wooden door wide open. And there it was... as still as a statue!

Picture
Can you believe it! I had to take a picture to show you. The penguin wouldn’t leave me alone. It follows me everywhere. What should I do? Can you write me a letter to give me some advice on what to do? Remember to start your letter with - Dear Shay on the left corner and on the right corner you can put the address of our school and the date.

You need to write in 2nd person and let me know about your thoughts and feelings after hearing this news. I am looking forward to read your letters. You can use your homework books to write them.

However I am excited to see some of your transport vehicles today, so please do upload them on Purplemash or send it in an email to Joan. I can see Hayat’s, which she managed to upload in her own Purplemash folder. Well done Hayat! It looks great.

Reading

Have a read of the poem ‘In Praise of Penguins’ by Robin Bernard. Now try to perform the poem to your family. I know it’s such a shame that we won’t have our poetry slam this week. But you have a small audience at home. Think about reading with expressions and add some actions to make it more exciting.

Maths
Have a look at the challenges below. Choose which challenge you want to do and work your way up. You don’t have to do them all today. Read the questions very carefully and do the working out in your homework book.

A very good morning to you all! I have some exciting learning for you today. So please read on but firstly I would like to share a message from Shyma.

"Hi children, I hope you are all well and staying safe. I am sure you are   keeping busy with all the fantastic online learning posted online.

We miss all very much, and thinking of you everyday".

Reading
‘They rowed south for many days and nights with the boy telling many stories. The penguin listened to everything the boy said.’

If you were the boy what stories would you tell? Make a pretend boat and pick someone to be a penguin. Tell them your favourite story. Remember to use expressions!

Picture

Design and Technology
Yesterday I asked you to think about the materials you would choose to make different parts of your vehicle, how did you get on? Today why not have a go at making your own vehicle using anything you find around the house. You can use plastic bottle lids, cardboards or anything circular for wheels. You can use plastic bottles, tissue rolls for the body of your vehicle. Be careful when you are using scissors. Work with someone and be safe. You don’t  have to finish it in a day. Please can you also write down a list of things you need and write step by step instructions as you are making it, so I can have a go at making a similar vehicle? Here are some ideas for you. You can send a picture once you have finished. Good luck.

Good morning all,
Hope you had a good week so far. Shay, Pauline and Shyma are all missing you terribly. Well done to those children who joined in our blogs and posted! Shout out to Sameen, Aaliyah, Ishaq A and Furkan for sharing. Also a mention for Aaliyah and Furkan for their lovely poster about the missing penguin.

Literacy
Look at the picture below. How does the boy feel when everyone ignores him? How many adjectives can you think of to describe how he feels? Draw the picture in your book and write as many adjectives around the picture.

Maths
We have had two weeks of learning how to add and subtract using different strategies. Now we are going to use inverse operation to solve missing number problems. Inverse means using the opposite operation.
40 + [ ] = 70
I can solve this by using inverse operation, which is subtraction.
70 - 40 = 30
so the missing number is 30.

challenge 1
[ ] + 3o = 50
40 + [ ] = 60
25 + [ ] = 46

challenge 2
40 + [ ] = 67
55 + [ ] = 86
[  ] - 34 = 65

challenge 3
49 + [ ] = 79
61 = [ ] + 25
102 - [ ] = 155
35 + [ ] = 47 - [ ]
Now make a missing number challenge for someone in your family.

Science
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zrssgk7/articles/z9pgcdm
Use this link to go and watch the video about different materials. Start thinking about which materials would be suitable to make the body of your transport vehicle so you don’t get wet when you drive?
Which material would you use to make the tyres or windows? Draw a picture of your vehicle and write a sentence about different parts and what material would you choose and why.

Learning for today

25/3/2020

Good morning Y2. Hope you are all doing fine. Here are the home learning activities for today. I want to say thanks to Furkan and Ishaq A for sharing their thoughts and feelings on purplemash blog.

Reading
Choose a book from serial mash and do all the activities for each chapter. Select a book from the diamonds selection. When you are reading the book think about 'Lost and Found' story and see if there is anything same or different between the two.

Literacy

Picture
Design a poster for the penguin. Think about what you may need to add in your poster. You need a title, picture. You need lots of descriptions of the penguin as well as some information about how you found it. You also need to give them a phone number to contact you. Remember you don't give out personal information. You can make up a phone number just like I have:  000886475849

A title could be...

Have you lost a penguin?

Are you missing a penguin?

Strange visitor found in my town!

Maths

Log in to studyladder to see some subtraction and addition challenges. There will be some word problems to solve. Use your homework book to do the working out. Remember to partition the numbers into tens and ones. Use your learn its facts.
If you know 3 + 4 = 7 then you know 30 + 40 = 70.
If you know 9 - 6 = 3 then you know 90 - 60 = 30.
